It was a privilege for Vice Chair Guy and me to meet with Col. Jenny Colegate, Base Commander at Quantico Marine Corps Base, for our spring partnership meeting.

Strengthening the relationship between our community and those who serve is work that truly matters. There’s no greater honor than advocating for and supporting the brave men and women who protect our nation every day. 🇺🇸

Friends and neighbors,

I know many of us are still stuck, and I share your frustration. I want to be very clear and transparent about what I know and why this situation feels so slow.

From what I’m told, it is the way this storm hit us. Snow was followed by sleet and freezing rain, then temperatures dropped quickly into the low 20s and single digits overnight. That thick layer of ice that was created at those temperatures, demand more than just salt and heavier equiptment VDOT doesnt have enough of. Normal plowing cannot break through the ice.

VDOT is still working, but progress is extremely slow and depends heavily on sunlight and heavier equipment. Many neighborhood roads may only be made “passable,” which means a single path with sand for traction, not curb-to-curb or down to pavement plowing. As of this morning, some neighborhood roads had not yet seen a plow, and others may not improve much until temperatures rise. And the forcast isn’t looking good on that at all.

This is not the update anyone wants and I dont enjoy giving it. It absolutely frustrates me too. But until the ice begins to soften, full clearing is not realistic, no matter how much effort or equipment is thrown at it. VDOT has told us from the start this would be a long response that could last through the work week. I am assuming it absolutely will!

Please continue to stay off the roads if you can. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.

I am staying in contact with county leadership and VDOT and will keep sharing updates as I receive them. I know this is hard. Thank you for your patience and please continue to look out for one another.

As this winter storm moves in, I want to encourage everyone to stay home and stay off the roads if at all possible. Crews and emergency responders need clear access to do their jobs safely, and the best way we can help is by staying put.

Please check on neighbors if you can do so safely, keep phones charged, and use extra layers to stay warm if power outages occur. If you have an emergency, call 911. Stafford Sheriffs non emergency number is 540-658-4400.

Please stay safe and take care of one another.

⚠️ Prepare for the possibility of long‑duration power outages 🧊 1/24/26

Dry snow and sleet pellets do not cause operational trouble, freezing rain and ice are our main concerns.

🟧 Customers in the Orange shading can expect the Ice Storm to cause disruptions to daily life and infrastructure, including power outages.

🟥 Customers in the Red areas are likely to see considerable daily life disruptions, impossible travel conditions, and widespread infrastructure disruptions and power outages.

VA / NC: Snow changes to sleet Sunday morning, then to freezing rain lasting through Sunday and into early Monday. Widespread 0.25–0.50" of ice expected.

SC: Western SC could see 0.20–0.40" of ice from freezing rain. Farther east: mostly dry Saturday, rain Sunday with a few downpours and isolated thunder. Winds may briefly gust 30–35 mph. Conditions clear overnight into Monday.
