Village Hill Road in Stafford is currently closed at the intersection of Forest Road due to a tree that has fallen onto power lines and across the road.

Please avoid the area and use an alternate route while utility crews respond. There is no estimated time for reopening at this time.

🚧 Traffic Alert – July 14, 2026 🚧

Willington Ave. Stafford, CT

Due to a collapsing storm sewer catch basin, a one-lane closure has been put in place near 42 Willington Avenue. The closure is necessary to prevent further damage to the roadway and to maintain public safety.

The Town of Stafford Public Works Department will make repairs first thing tomorrow morning, July 15, 2026.

Please use caution when traveling through the area, watch for traffic control devices, and expect minor delays. We appreciate your patience as we work to safely complete the repairs.

Town Paving Program Update
Fiscal Year 2026 Completed Work

During fiscal year 2026, the town completed approximately 4.4 miles of roadway resurfacing. This work included:

Hampden Road, approximately 2.97 miles
An asphalt overlay on approximately 1,500 feet, or 0.28 mile, of the worst section of Gulf Road
Edgewood Street, approximately 1 mile
Clinton Street, approximately 0.1 mile
Replacement of the Edgewood Street sidewalk

Milling and paving have been completed on Clinton Street and Edgewood Street. Some final work remains, including backfilling along the newly replaced sidewalk and completing driveway aprons where needed.

Fiscal Year 2027 Planned Work

Colburn Road is scheduled to be milled beginning around August 13, 2026, or during the week of August 13, with paving to follow shortly afterward.

The Colburn Road project covers approximately 1.58 miles between Route 19 and Hydeville Road. The project will also include minor repairs to the Colburn Road Bridge near Route 19 and completion of the small section of Upper Road between Colburn Road and the abandoned Upper Road bridge.

Colburn Road will be completed through the State of Connecticut’s vendor-in-place paving contract. The current estimated cost of the project is approximately $500,000.

Between the work completed during fiscal year 2026 and the planned resurfacing of Colburn Road, the town will have addressed approximately 5.9 miles of roadway. This total does not include the additional small section of Upper Road.

Future Paving Program

The town is currently completing an updated pavement evaluation of roads throughout Stafford. The evaluation will be used to develop short- and long-term resurfacing and reconstruction plans, including one-year, three-year, five-year, and ten-year priorities.

The paving program will be based on current roadway conditions, traffic use, available external funding, and the amount allocated for paving each fiscal year. Once the pavement evaluation is complete, the Town will determine its paving priorities for the remainder of FY 2027

All paving schedules are subject to change due to weather, contractor availability, equipment issues, and other unforeseen conditions.

Cooper Lane Update

Cooper Lane has reopened to traffic following a temporary closure earlier today.

During this week's prolonged period of extreme heat, portions of the chip seal emulsion applied to Cooper Lane last year began to soften and rise to the surface, a condition known as pavement bleeding. While we have observed signs of this during previous hot weather, the recent temperatures made the condition more pronounced.

As a temporary measure, the Department of Public Works applied a layer of clean stone over the affected areas. This is a common treatment that helps absorb excess asphalt emulsion and provides a safer driving surface when temperatures are moderate.

The stone will remain on the roadway for approximately one week before it is swept. Until then, motorists are asked to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution due to the loose stone.

This is a temporary treatment while we continue to evaluate the underlying cause of the pavement bleeding and determine the most appropriate long-term solution.

🚧 Notice of Temporary Road Closure 🚧 Cooper Lane, Town of Stafford. Closure Effective: July 2, 2026, at 4:00 PM, until further notice.

Cooper Lane, from Route 190 (West Stafford Road) to Route 140 (Park Street), will be temporarily closed to through traffic to allow for emergency road work. Cooper Lane residents, including emergency vehicles, will continue to have access but are advised to use caution. Updates will be provided as they become available.

UPDATE: Gulf Road is now open

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE – GULF ROAD 🚧

The Town of Stafford Department of Public Works will be temporarily closing a section of Gulf Road between Boyer Road and Harvey Lane to complete a roadway overlay project.

This work is being performed as an interim repair measure to improve roadway conditions until full reconstruction of the road can be completed in the future.

A short detour will guide motorists around the closed section of roadway via Harvey Lane, Spusta Road, and Boyer Road.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution in the area and allow additional travel time during construction activities.

We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation while this work is completed.

05/06/2026

The Town of Stafford would like to notify residents that milling and paving operations on Hampden Rd will be starting next week. Milling is scheduled to begin May 13 and continue through the week. Paving operations are scheduled to begin the following week, starting May 19.

Due to the narrow roadway widths on portions of Hampden Road, sections of Hampden Road will be closed to through traffic during construction operations. Access will be limited to local residents and deliveries only.

This will include:
• Between Tetrault Rd and Route 190
• Between Tetrault Rd Road and the end of Hampden Road near Spencer

These road closures are required for safety and the timely completion of the work. The Town and contractor will work to maintain access for local residents, school buses, mail delivery, and emergency services within reasonable limits throughout the project.

Motorists should expect delays and temporary traffic pattern changes during operations. If you do not need to travel through the area, please consider using an alternate route to help reduce congestion and improve safety for workers and residents.

The Stafford Transfer Station will be closed Friday, April 3rd 2026 in observance of Good Friday.

We will reopen with normal hours on Saturday, 7am to 5pm.
