The members of Brooke Volunteer Fire Rescue send prayers for comfort and strength to the family and members of Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management over the tragic loss of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel.

It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel, who tragically died in an off-duty drowning incident at Lake Anna. Mason was only 24 years old.

This is a heartbreaking loss for Mason’s family, friends, coworkers, and our entire FREM family. We ask that you keep his family and everyone who knew and loved Mason in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Our department will stand beside Mason’s family and our members in the days ahead. We will do everything we can to support them, care for one another, and honor Mason and his service to our community.

Please continue to lift up Mason’s family, friends, and fellow department members.

Rest easy, Mason. You will not be forgotten.

Tonight, the dedicated volunteers of Brooke Fire Rescue were first on the scene of a residential structure fire in our first due area.

Our members quickly went to work, extinguishing the fire and completing a primary search to ensure there were no occupants in the residence. Thanks to their training, teamwork, and rapid response, the fire was brought under control and the incident was successfully mitigated.

Last night, members of Brooke Fire Rescue trained alongside Stafford Volunteer Fire Department, White Oak Volunteer Fire Department and Mountain View Fire Department in a hands-on vehicle extrication exercise.

Crews practiced vehicle stabilization and patient extrication using multiple techniques and specialized tools. These realistic scenarios help ensure we are prepared to safely and efficiently handle complex vehicle accidents when seconds matter.

A special thank you to Stafford Fire Department Truck 2 for providing additional extrication tools used during the training. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to train and strengthen our skills together.

Working together, learning together, and preparing together makes all of our departments stronger—and ultimately benefits the communities we proudly serve.

Probationary Firefighters from Brooke Volunteer Fire Rescue and Stafford Volunteer Fire Department honed their vehicle stabilization and vehicle extraction skills. We would like to thank the Stafford Volunteers for bringing Truck 1502 and utilizing the equipment on board. This drill exemplifies what working together can produce.
