INFORMATION UPDATE:

Mulch Fire Causes Detour, Large Emergency Response

Just after 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, August 10th, Stafford County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) units were dispatched for a reported mulch fire near the intersection of Austin Ridge Drive and Courthouse Road. Crews arrived approximately one minute later and found a large pile of mulch smoking on land that was recently cleared. Crews continued to monitor the fire throughout the evening, and the developer brought in an excavation company overnight to work in conjunction with fire suppression efforts. The fire continued to burn into the morning of August 11th, and efforts continued throughout the day. Courthouse Road was shut down and a detour was established throughout much of Friday to allow crews to have access to the closest fire hydrant. The roadway was reopened after 5 P.M. on Friday.

Throughout the course of the incident, the developer worked closely with fire and rescue personnel to mitigate the issue. The Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office has charged the developer with violations of the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code, specifically, for creating a fire hazard by allowing combustible waste material to accumulate.
