Warrior Wednesday: A Legacy of Resilience and Courage

Today, we honor the extraordinary story of Marine Corps hero, Don Harris, whose courage and resilience were tested during the fierce battle of Iwo Jima. Enduring five amphibious assaults, this warrior not only survived but also played an essential role in one of the most pivotal battles of WWII.

Their story is a reminder of the sacrifice, strength, and unwavering commitment of all Marines—whether in combat or in the Reserve. Each day, Marine Corps Reservists continue this legacy, standing ready to face any challenge with the same tenacity.

As we reflect on this powerful tale of survival, let us salute all who have served, and remember: The fight for freedom is never easy, but it is always worth it.

Semper Fi!

Eighty years ago, Don Harris went ashore on Iwo Jima, where he and his fellow Marines faced one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War.

On This Day in History: February 28, 1991

Operation Desert Storm officially ended when the cease-fire declared by President George H. W. Bush went into effect. With more than 92,000 Marines, the I Marine Expeditionary Force made Operation Desert Storm the largest Marine Corps operation in history.

Though the operation was a decisive victory, it came at a cost. A total of 24 Marines were killed in action during the Gulf War, their sacrifice serving as a testament to the courage and dedication of the Marine Corps.

We honor their service and remember their sacrifice.

The Association Steps Up to Support "Carlos" Company, 1/23

The Association's mission is to be the premier support organization for the Marine Corps Reserve, and we recently lived up to that by answering a call for help from "Carlos" Company, 1/23 out of Corpus Christi, TX.

This "straight-leg" grunt unit faced a significant challenge: a lack of access to a local pistol range, which had impacted their training for over two years. Sgt. Sam Bravo, the Training NCOIC, reached out for support, and after careful deliberation, the Board approved funding to make the range a reality.

Led by Board member Cullen L.L. Chavis, the Marines worked together over four days to build a fully functional pistol range. This new facility allows "Carlos" Company to conduct vital Combat Pistol Program training, ensuring their readiness and continued ability to serve.

We’re proud to support our Reserve units and fulfill our mission to ensure their success.

On This Day in History: February 23, 1945

Four days after the initial landings on Iwo Jima, 1stLt Harold G. Schrier and 40 men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, made a historic climb up Mt. Suribachi. Their mission: secure the crest and raise the American flag.

Under intense conditions, after a brief firefight with Japanese defenders emerging from caves, Schrier and his men reached the rim of the crater. They attached the small flag, given to Schrier by battalion commander LtCol Chandler Johnson, to an iron pipe and raised it over the island.

This moment would become one of the most iconic images of World War II, symbolizing the unwavering courage and determination of the Marine Corps.

On This Day in History: February 15, 1898

On this fateful day, the USS Maine, a U.S. battleship, was tragically sunk by a mysterious explosion in Havana Harbor, Cuba. The explosion resulted in the loss of 28 Marines and 232 seamen. While no definitive evidence ever surfaced to directly implicate Spain in the incident, the cry "Remember the Maine!" quickly spread across the United States, stirring strong anti-Spanish sentiment.

This tragic event became one of the key catalysts for the Spanish-American War, which officially began in late April 1898, marking a pivotal moment in American history and its emergence as a global power.

“The effects of the Marine Corps JROTC program reach far beyond the classroom and into the community in developing character, leadership, and civic responsibility in tens of thousands of America’s kids. Marine Corps JROTC, at its essence, is a character education program. The program keeps kids in school, helps them find their way during the turbulent teenage years, and assists them in becoming productive members of their community. Our program produces young men and women who are ready to accept the responsibilities as well as the privileges of citizenship. We are rightfully proud of our contribution to America’s future and thankful for the dedicated instructors, staff, school administrators, and communities whose hard work and commitment make the program’s success possible. ”
