Today was a day of 10k+ steps
This morning we visited an urban sustainable development center where students participated in a workshop to discuss and plan for a sustainable project. We walked along the East Side Gallery, had lunch in a local shopping area in small groups, and then met our local tour guide, Carolyn, who shared information on how Berlin has changed over the years both as a city and in its culture. Through the tour we saw highlights of:
- Bradenburg Gate
- Humboldt University (where Einstein taught for 19 years) and learned about Lize Meitner who was the female scientist who worked on the splitting of an atom but was not credited
- the Book burning memorial
- the Berlin Cathedral and Synagogue
- memorials of war and Roma people
- the Holocaust memorial of Berlin
- a teacher house (with murals of teachers teaching in their content)
- a replica of Sputnik in the formerly USSR occupied district
After our time with our guide we visited the Futurium Museum where students could interact with ideas for the future of sustainability efforts.
