17 Prospect Street- By Karen Cuccinello Stamford Library historian
The collection of old photos in the Stamford Library history room did not include a photo of 17 Prospect so had to take a new one. I believe the land was originally owned by Frances Russell Gilbert (1830-1897), then Jacob (1839-1909) and wife Anna (Moss 1837-1918) Kirkner, of Plainfield, NJ, bought quite a bit of Gilbert’s land including 17 Prospect. Kirkner built a house at 1 Kirkner Hill in 1883 (the house burned down in 1931). Harry B. Fisher bought 17 and 19 Prospect from Jacob Kirkners son John in 1924 and 1927 then Fisher sold both to Santo Accurso, of Brooklyn, in 1965. Charles Accuro, executor of his father Santo’s estate, sold the property to himself and sister Mrs. Josephine Colangelo in 1968. DJK Plumbing and Heating was operated out of 17 Prospect by Daniel J. Kirby from about 1972-1977. I believe they rented it until they moved to TX by 1978. Angelo and Carole Cinelli, of Islip Terrace, NY, bought from William B. Rickett in 1981. In 1988 Angelo Cinelli owned 17 and 21 Prospect; he lived at 21 Prospect until the 1990’s. Angelo and Carole Cinelli sold to Carl L. Alimonti 1996 then to Ruth Sherman in 2003. The current owner purchased it in 2015.
January 8, 1969 Stamford Mirror-Recorder - Harry B. Fisher, 97, of Stamford, died December 30, at the Delaware County Infirmary, Delhi, following an extended illness. Funeral services were January 2. at the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, with the Rev. William R. Phinney, pastor of the Stamford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be later in Stamford Cemetery. He was born November 2, 1871 at Harbor Creek. Pa., a son of Charles and Lois (Burdick) Fisher. He married Anna Brennan who died October 28, 1955. A resident of Stamford for most of his lifetime. Mr. Fisher was a carpenter and mason and employed by both the N. P. Young and the Kirkner estates. Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.
Santo Accurso was born in Italy November 2/3, 1888/89 to Pietro Accurso and his wife Roselia/Rose Mozzanobili (1898-1960) was also born in Italy. Santo, age 21, bricklayer, from Resuttano, Sicily, Italy sailed from Palermo, Italy on the SS San Giovanni June 19, 1910 to his brother Vincenzo in NYC with $20 in his pocket; height 5’4” and chestnut hair. He sailed again in July 1912 perhaps to pick up his wife to be. They had three children, Josephine/Josie/Mrs. Arthur Colangelo (1921-2006), twin Pietro/Peter (1921-1958) and Charles (1923-2005). Santo, a WWI veteran died June 23, 1968 at Stamford Community hospital, burial in Long Island National Cemetery East Farmingdale, NY.
Charles Accurso was living at 10 Prospect when he married Mary Fontanazzi, of Brooklyn, October 28, 1962 in Brooklyn (he owned a few properties in Stamford including Jacy Shop). Charles, wife and son Robert moved back to Brooklyn about 1970.
Angelo “Charlie” Cinelli was a Village of Stamford trustee and a member of the Kiwanis in the 1980’s. The Cinelli’s held an auction of the entire contents of their house at 21 Prospect in 1990 because they planned to move to FL.
