Hello everybody, I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make our 2019 Summer Reading Club such a wild success for our Stamford area children, we couldn’t have done it without you! Your support helps instill a lifelong love of reading for our local kids and keeps them engaged with books in the summertime.

First off, many thanks to the ladies of the Stamford VIP Center for opening your doors to host our annual program. Your large, clean space allowed for more fun and play for the kids. We were joined by 133 children last week, that’s more than we could fit at the library last year!

I’d like to thank our readers, Mrs. Anita Marquez, Mrs. Sandy Taber, and Mr. Ed Stafford for joining this librarian in taking the time to excite these young minds and lead us through an adventure each day during our story time. You educated, entertained, and inspired!

My most heartfelt thanks goes to those who worked each day behind the scenes, helping with our set up, crafts, snacks, and clean up. Lupie Gonzales, Rosa Robles, Clara Carter, Peggy Campbell, Venise Carter, and Esmeralda Carter were my heroes all week, helping out each day to make the magic happen! Many thanks to you, ladies!!!

Thanks to our teen helpers, Ben Mettler (who is our hot potato and game master), Madison Garcia, and Hailee Richardson who helped the kids with their craft projects and made me feel cool. Y’all were a big help to the younger ones and they really look up to you!

And last but not least (as these folks helped with most of the kids’ favorite part), many thanks to our cookie bakers! Whether you baked them or bought them, we definitely felt the love! Thanks Dorothy Doan, Veronica Moreno, Jayme Kinney and Nina, Vanessa, and Krissy McClintock for your sweet treats. They really stood out as something special this year!

On Thursday, July 18 we learned about the constellations while Mr. Ed Stafford read Zoo in the Sky by Jacqueline Mitton. Then the kids made the Big Dipper at the tail end of Ursa Major. We shared our birth signs and colored in the zodiac. Then made delicious constellations out of pretzel sticks and marshmallows for our snack. We finished off the day with duck duck goose and Simon says!

HIGH SPEED BROADBAND GRANT AWARDED!

The Stamford Carnegie Library is pleased to announce we have received an E-rate grant from Texas State Library to make high speed broadband internet publicly available here in Stamford!

The grant will pay for the installation of new lines to the library that will provide speeds of 250mbps and cover at least one full year of service, valued at $16,036.92. (For those of you who don’t know what 250mbps is, it means it is CRAZY FAST internet! Right now we are at 24mbps, which is OK, but not all that great.)

Having been approved for E-rate insures the library will receive an 80% discounted rate for service after the grant cycle, well into the foreseeable future. Texas State Library hopes to continue their support, and are looking into possibly covering monthly service costs for the following year as well. The new line is scheduled to be installed at the end of June, 2019, and high speed broadband service will be accessible free of charge to anyone with a library card.

We’d like to note that in the last 9 years the library has received a total of $81,585.92 in grant funding! That is not a typo. Over eighty thousand dollars in grants have provided for early literacy programs, several new computers, our Apollo online automation system and website (2014), the TAME Traveling Science Bus (2016), the digitization of the Stamford American Newspaper archives (2017), archival shelving in partnership with the Cowboy Country Museum (2018), a computer programming “Code Club” for kids (2018), and now fiber installation and free public access to high speed broadband internet in Stamford (2019).

We are here to serve the public and help better our community, come in and visit us and see what all the library can do for you!
