We maintain two fire stations, with our main station located at 366 Old Long Ridge Road in Stamford, CT. We're one of Stamford's Big Five Volunteer Fire Departments. Today we got to take part, alongside Stamford Fire Rescue and Stamford Hospital, in an assembly at West Hill regarding driving while under the influence and the repercussions of them.

We also spoke to students about their interest in joining their local volunteer houses, as Stamford has five. We appreciate their interest and look forward to seeing them in the future.

❄️ With the blizzard past us here are some “house keeping” post blizzard safety tips ❄️

🚒 Critical Fire & Life Safety

These are the non-negotiables to prevent fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

• Clear the Vents: Locate your furnace, water heater, and dryer exhaust vents. If they are buried under snow, carbon monoxide can back up into your home.

• Clear the Fire Hydrant: If you have a hydrant on or near your property, clear a 3-foot perimeter around it. In an emergency, every second firefighters spend shoveling is a second they aren't fighting a fire.

• Check Smoke/CO Alarms: If you lost power and are relying on generators or fireplaces, ensure your detectors are functioning properly.

• Clear the Meters: Gently brush snow off your gas meter and regulator to prevent pressure buildup or leaks.

🏠 Structural & Property Maintenance

Keep the "bones" of your house safe from the weight and moisture.

• Clear Primary & Secondary Exits: Ensure at least two doors can swing fully open in case you need to evacuate. Don't forget the basement bulkhead if that's a main exit.

• Monitor Roof Loads: Look for signs of stress (creaking sounds or interior doors that suddenly stick). Use a roof rake if necessary, but stay well away from power lines.

• Clear the Mailbox: It's not just for bills—keeping the path clear ensures your address is visible to emergency responders and keeps the mail carrier safe.

🚗 Neighbors & Community

• The "Vulnerable Check": North Stamford has many tucked-away properties. If you have elderly neighbors or those with limited mobility, give them a call or a knock to ensure their heat is still on.

• Space for Emergency Vehicles: When shoveling your driveway, avoid pushing snow into the street. Keep the roadway wide enough for a fire engine or ambulance to pass through.

As a blizzard warning is in effect for Stamford from 1:00 PM Sunday (2/22) through 6:00 PM Monday (2/23), the Long Ridge Fire Company reminds our North Stamford neighbors to stay safe and prepared.

With up to 20 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 50 mph expected, here is a critical tip to help us help you:

❄️ Shovel Out Your Fire Hydrant
If you have a fire hydrant near your home, please shovel a 3-foot perimeter around it and clear a path to the roadway.

• Why it matters: In deep snow and drifting conditions, hydrants can become completely buried. In an emergency, every second spent by firefighters searching for and digging out a hydrant is a second lost in saving a home.

• Pro Tip: While you’re out there, check your furnace and dryer vents. Clear away snow buildup to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide from backing up into your house.

Important Community Reminders:

• Snow Emergency: Mayor Simmons has declared a Snow Emergency through Wednesday morning. Please move vehicles off the streets or follow "alternate side" parking rules to let the plows do their work.

• Stay Off the Roads: Blizzard conditions will make travel extremely hazardous. Stay home and stay warm.

• Generator Safety: Never run a generator indoors or in a garage. Keep it at least 20 feet from your home and away from windows/doors.

Stay safe, Stamford! If you have an emergency, dial 911. For non-emergent fire safety questions, you can reach the Long Ridge Fire Company at (203) 322-5200.
