Supporters of current policies argue more time and investment are needed. Critics argue that focusing primarily on school assignment and funding has not solved the underlying causes of achievement gaps.
Either way, the report is likely to fuel renewed debate during the 2026 election

Top 5

1. Connecticut Has One of the Largest Education Achievement Gaps in America
-Connecticut ranked 49th out of 50 states for racial equality in educational outcomes.
-The biggest problem is the gap in college degree attainment between White and Black residents.

2. The Issue Isn't Just School Funding
-Despite decades of court orders, reforms, and billions spent on education, large achievement gaps remain.
-A separate Brown University study found that school finance reforms have not fully closed racial funding gaps and may have increased inequities in some cases.

3. The Hartford School Integration Case Is Still Driving Policy
-The landmark Sheff v. O'Neill ruling found Hartford's schools were unconstitutionally segregated.
-Thirty years later, Connecticut is still operating under court-supervised agreements intended to reduce segregation.

4. State Officials Say Progress Is Being Made
-In late 2025, the Connecticut State Department of Education reported that 96% of Hartford families seeking placements outside the city school system received them, exceeding a major court-ordered benchmark.
-More seats are scheduled to be added through magnet schools, Open Choice programs, and technical schools through 2029.

5. The Debate Is Shifting from Access to Outcomes
-Connecticut has invested heavily in school choice and integration efforts.
-The WalletHub study suggests that while access may be improving, significant gaps in test scores, graduation rates, and college attainment remain.

“Like you, I love our state. I was born and raised here and graduated from our public schools. My parents, working-class city kids of union tradesmen, worked hard and moved to Connecticut. They instilled in my brothers and me a sense of faith, hard work, and an obligation to do what is right. Now I’m running for governor to restore the opportunity and affordability for your family that my family moved here for decades ago.”

There’s more to this campaign than some in the media will tell you. Hear it from me directly.

We need Republican leadership

Connecticut looks like it has extra money today, but critics say Hartford got there by changing the rules and spending temporary tax windfalls instead of paying down long-term debt.

1. The State Has a Surplus — But Barely
-Politicians are celebrating a $330 million surplus, but without some -last-minute budget changes Connecticut actually would have been about $45 million in the red.

2. Hartford Changed the Rules
-Connecticut has "fiscal guardrails" that are supposed to stop politicians from spending unexpected tax windfalls.
-This year, lawmakers temporarily changed those rules so they could use more money for current spending.

3. Less Money Went Toward Paying Off Pension Debt
-Instead of putting extra money toward Connecticut's massive pension debt, lawmakers redirected hundreds of millions of dollars to programs and grants.
-Think of it like making the minimum payment on your credit card so you can spend more today.

4. The Extra Money Came From a Good Stock Market
-A lot of the surplus came from wealthy investors paying more taxes after a strong market year.
-The problem? Those revenues can disappear quickly if the economy slows or the market drops.

5. The Real Question Is What Happens Later
-Critics say Connecticut is spending today's windfall and leaving tomorrow's taxpayers with the bill.
-If revenues fall in the future, lawmakers may face:
Higher taxes
Spending cuts
More borrowing

Connecticut lawmakers will point to the Office of Fiscal Analysis (OFA) May 28 reports as proof the state remains firmly in the black. The headline number is convenient: a projected $329.8 million General Fund surplus for FY 26. The fine print tells a more complicated story. OFA’s May 28 budg

It is with great sadness that we have been alerted to the news of Nicola Tarzia’s passing.

Nicola “Nic” has been a lifelong resident of Stamford where he had built a company and embodied the American dream by building a local business, the Tarzia Group.

He had a passion for the community and public service from being involved with SPEF, the Tarzia Foundation, Dollars for Scholars, serving on the Board of Education, and most recently running for Mayor. He always had a smile on his face and wanted to bring a smile to yours.

Nic was a friend to so many of us and cared deeply for all the people of this great city.

He will be missed and will be remembered with respect and appreciation.
