The Greene County Sheriff’s Office sends our deepest prayers and condolences to the Martinsville City Sheriff’s Office following the passing of Sheriff Draper.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Sheriff Draper was Virginia’s longest-serving sheriff, having faithfully served his community since being elected in 1993.

He was a true wealth of knowledge, a dedicated public servant, and someone whose commitment to the citizens he served will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply mourned, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and respected him.

We stand with the Martinsville City Sheriff’s Office and the entire Draper family during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the many lives he touched and the legacy of service he leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Draper. Your service and dedication will never be forgotten. 🙏💙

We know there has been a lot of discussion about our office’s participation in the 287(g) program. As Sheriff, I was elected and sworn to protect our citizens first and foremost, and I will never waver in that commitment.

I am sworn to uphold the Constitution and the law, and that is exactly what I have done and will continue to do.

With regard to the 287(g) program and our cooperation with ICE, we will continue working to remove criminals like the individuals below from our streets. These men are just a few examples of people removed from our community through our cooperation with the 287(g) program.

MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, is a violent transnational criminal organization with a documented history of serious criminal activity, including murder, assault, kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, robbery, and obstruction of justice. Their criminal activity has impacted communities across the United States, including Virginia.

Our cooperation with our federal partners is about public safety and protecting the people of Greene County. I will continue working every day to make our community a safer place for all citizens.

-Sheriff Steven Smith
