Dalton Miller, 57, of Stanford, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Lexington Veterans Hospital, following a courageous two-year battle with colon cancer.

Dalton dedicated his life to serving others. A proud United States Army Veteran, he honorably served his country for more than two decades, including deployments during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following a distinguished military career, he retired from the Army in 2006.

While continuing in the National Guard, Dalton continued his life's mission of helping people through a career in social work. He often described social work not as a profession, but as a ministry. Through his work, he helped countless children find loving homes through adoption and provided hope and support to families during difficult times. Even after retiring from social work in 2018, his commitment to helping others never ended. He remained a source of encouragement, guidance, and compassion to all who knew him.

Dalton's love for his community led him into public service. He served as a Stanford City Councilman before being elected Mayor of Stanford in 2020, a position he faithfully held until his passing. Dalton often said that being Mayor was his favorite job he had ever held and that it never felt like work—even on the most challenging days. He loved the people of Stanford and was passionate about making the community a better place for everyone.

Known for his exceptional leadership, warm personality, and genuine care for others, Dalton was a natural people person and a gifted manager who brought people together. He consistently put the needs of Stanford and its citizens first, earning the respect, admiration, and affection of those he served. His impact on the city will be felt for generations, and his legacy of service, kindness, and dedication will forever remain a part of the Stanford community.

Dalton was also a faithful member of Lancaster First Assembly of God, where his faith guided his life and his service to others. His Christian witness was evident in the compassion he showed, the relationships he built, and the countless lives he touched.
Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, Dalton's life stands as a testament to faith, sacrifice, service, and love. He leaves behind a grateful community, cherished family members, dear friends, and countless individuals whose lives were made better because of his presence.

His memory will be treasured, his example will continue to inspire, and his legacy of servant leadership will never be forgotten.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

Survivors include his loving wife, Treina Bunch Miller; three children, Isaiah Miller (Aubrey), Aisha Sims (Nas), Tra Carey (Carleigh); six siblings, Bobby Lee (Ann), Buford lee, Ricky Burton, Danny Burton (Lora), Jeff Miller and Larry Miller; eight grandchildren, Brantlee, Brooklynn, Risan, Londyn, Chason, Ella, MiAmor and Ava; and host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Ethel Miller; and two siblings, Mary Ann Pendleton and Timmy “Honeybun” Burton.

Six years…gone by so fast. The difference you have made in this City will be felt far longer than any of us will live to see. The faces of children now adults that have walked in City Hall just to say thank you, the lives changed will march on for countless generations to come. The laughter that rang from friends and family who were always welcomed with open arms and strangers who left as new friends will continue to shape the way we make time for and see the importance of the people over the task. There are not enough words to tell you thank you but know that you have forever changed us.

Yes, we are better financially, staffed stronger than ever, equipped with the tools we need to succeed, growing economically and fiscally, but above all that you showed us how to:

-Lead by example, family is ALWAYS first. Speak truth into their lives, even when they don’t like it. Make time. Love them fiercely!

-Be proud of your hometown, know its history, support it. “They” are you! We need each other more than we want to admit. Heaven will not have sections filled with only the people you like.

-Value others! “I don’t have to know everything. I just need to surround myself with people who do.”
Relationships matter! Surround yourself with people you trust and then empower them to be the best they can be.
I’ve worked a lot of places in my years, but never have I felt more capable and grown so much. I was never afraid to say I made a mistake. I knew I would not be yelled at or condemned, but given the encouragement and whatever help I needed to make it right.

-Love out loud! “He may have made a mistake but he is still my friend and he needs to know he’s loved, so I told him.” Words matter, say them and say them often.

-Fight and fight hard! Then trust God with the outcome. His way is always good. In the mean time, find someone else to help. Your work isn’t done just because life gets hard.

-Be ready, we aren’t home yet! “Y’all listen, if you want to see me again, get your heart and life right with Jesus, ‘cause that’s where I’ll be.”

Lace up those running shoes and get ready for the Wilderness Road Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K on September 20, 2026! These races are a one of a kind event along the Historic Wilderness Road and this year we are celebrating the 250th Anniversary of our country, as well as, honoring the United States Marine Corp.
These races will take you back in time to the establishment of Fort Logan and the nation's expansion west of the Alleghany Mountains. Runners will follow in the footsteps of Isaac Shelby, the first Governor of Kentucky and William Whitley, the owner of the first brick house west of the Alleghany Mountains. William Whitley shook the world when he ran all of the horse races on his property counter clockwise. This was in direct opposition to the British custom of racing horses in a clockwise direction. Now in North America all Nascar, track and field, and horse racing, etc. run their races counter clockwise.
We are honoring the United States Marine Corp this year as Lincoln County was the home of Anthony Gale, the 4th Commandant of the USMC. Proceeds from the event will benefit the William Whitley House Endowment, so your strides are for a great cause!
The out and back course will start and finish in downtown Stanford, KY. Join us in celebrating our county's 250th Anniversary while we honor the brave men and women of the USMC. The event will be capped at 250 participants total. Register now at runsignup.com or by scanning the QR code on the flyer, as prices increase after July 4, 2026. Please share and help us get the word out.
