Cool Product Expo

Cool Product Expo Stanford University's Annual Cool Product Expo What product do we need to live tomorrow? What product makes tomorrow exist for us?

The Cool Product Expo (CPX) is all about “cool” products and the innovative companies that develop them, from all corners of the country and the globe. The CPX is one of the largest student-run events at Stanford, drawing visitors from across the university and, importantly, its surrounding communities as well – the CPX is free and open to public. This year, CPX organizers aim to expand our attend

ees’ sense of the possibilities in product design and create discussions under the theme “Product Design for Tomorrow”, and we are very proud of our rich tradition in this effort. Proudly held at Stanford, in the heart of Silicon Valley, the CPX aims to introduce attendees to the most engaging work of budding start-ups and university research lab projects, the latest R&D from global manufacturers, the best from local design studios, and much more. The CPX is made possible through the efforts of the Stanford Product Design & Manufacturing Club (PDMC) and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Inspired by her late grandmother who had Alzheimer’s disease, Sha of Sha Design, sought to better understand the disease by volunteering in adult day care centers. She discovered that eating was one of the most challenging daily activities. The cognitive and various sensory impairments of Alzheimer’s and other dementias can result in a variety of eating problems. She noticed that dementia sufferers often ate less than they should, and accidents with spilled food and tipped cups were common.

That’s the reason Sha created Eatwell, a tableware set with a user-centered design that helps to increase food intake and maintain dignity for its users, while also helping to alleviate caring burdens by making the process of eating as easy as possible. Sha designed Eatwell to help not only dementia sufferers but anyone anyone with cognitive or physical impairments, or difficulty eating.

The major features of the product include:

- high contrast colors help users distinguish food from tableware and stimulate appetite.
- specially curved spoons match the contours of the bowls to provide smoother, easier motions.
- slanted bottom and deep chambers collect food at corners for easier scooping.
- anti-tip design helps prevent accidents from mishandled cups and mugs

The tableware set has received several design awards and been featured in publications including Fast Company, Time Magazine, and Forbes, and won the Design Competition from the Stanford University Center on Longevity in 2014.

Since 2001 the Cool Product Expo (CPX) has hosted exhibitors on Stanford GSB’s campus to showcase the most innovative products from Silicon Valley and beyond. The event, one of the largest student-run events on campus, draws visitors from across the university and its surrounding community from entrepreneurs, investors, academics, and everyone in between.

Unlike most exhibits, CPX is designed for students and run by students. Led by a combination of MBA1 and MBA2's whose experiences range from fintech and agtec to design and education, CPX 2018 will be the first expo to focus on companies and products that “change lives”. Exhibitors will demo the latest technologies that deliver meaningful social impact for individuals and communities, a theme that resonates beyond the Stanford campus. Products include groundbreaking hardware, software, consumer tech, wearables, thinkables, driveables - anything and everything you can imagine.

The CPX team is particularly excited about this year’s conference because of the products and innovations that were only made possible by combining thinkers, doers, and makers that have envisioned a better world with a platform to share that vision. Over a thousand visitors attended CPX 2017 and countless connections were made across and beyond the Stanford community. Connecting entrepreneurs and their cutting edge products with the broader community here in Silicon Valley is a pillar of the CPX team. For CPX 2018, we can’t wait to share what happens when innovation meets impact.
