We must ensure that his legacy and vision lives on, and we will do everything possible to carry that forward.

Six years…gone by so fast. The difference you have made in this City will be felt far longer than any of us will live to see. The faces of children now adults that have walked in City Hall just to say thank you, the lives changed will march on for countless generations to come. The laughter that rang from friends and family who were always welcomed with open arms and strangers who left as new friends will continue to shape the way we make time for and see the importance of the people over the task. There are not enough words to tell you thank you but know that you have forever changed us.

Yes, we are better financially, staffed stronger than ever, equipped with the tools we need to succeed, growing economically and fiscally, but above all that you showed us how to:

-Lead by example, family is ALWAYS first. Speak truth into their lives, even when they don’t like it. Make time. Love them fiercely!

-Be proud of your hometown, know its history, support it. “They” are you! We need each other more than we want to admit. Heaven will not have sections filled with only the people you like.

-Value others! “I don’t have to know everything. I just need to surround myself with people who do.”
Relationships matter! Surround yourself with people you trust and then empower them to be the best they can be.
I’ve worked a lot of places in my years, but never have I felt more capable and grown so much. I was never afraid to say I made a mistake. I knew I would not be yelled at or condemned, but given the encouragement and whatever help I needed to make it right.

-Love out loud! “He may have made a mistake but he is still my friend and he needs to know he’s loved, so I told him.” Words matter, say them and say them often.

-Fight and fight hard! Then trust God with the outcome. His way is always good. In the mean time, find someone else to help. Your work isn’t done just because life gets hard.

-Be ready, we aren’t home yet! “Y’all listen, if you want to see me again, get your heart and life right with Jesus, ‘cause that’s where I’ll be.”

UPDATE: As of 12:00 soft lockdown has been lifted.

Highland Elementary was placed on a soft lockdown today after students on the playground reported hearing possible gunshots in the area.

The incident was immediately investigated by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office along with school staff and the School Resource Officer, who was already on scene at the time of the report.

At this time, no threats have been identified and there is no danger to students or staff. The school remained in a soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution while the situation was assessed. Classroom activities continued as normal while access to the building was temporarily restricted.

Student and staff safety remains our top priority. We appreciate the quick response of law enforcement, school personnel, and the patience and cooperation of parents during the incident.

• Unexpected texts or emails about violations or fines
• Urgent demands for immediate payment
• Requests to click links or scan QR codes
• Messages asking for personal or financial information

What you should do:
• Do NOT click links or scan QR codes
• Do NOT respond or provide any information

With daytime temperatures warming enough to melt snow and ice, then dropping sharply at night and refreezing it all into slick, black ice, conditions are extremely hazardous right now…including when trying to walk in your yard, which can turn into a ice rink. We’ve already responded to several calls for falls causing injuries on driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, and yards, so please be extra cautious everywhere outside: take small shuffling steps, use handrails when available, wear shoes with good traction, and salt or sand slippery areas if possible. If you or someone falls and needs help, call 911 right away we’re here 24/7. Stay safe out there.
