Shortage of 400,000 welders predicted in next 4 years

Did you know that we have a welding program at The Montcalm Area Career Center - The MACC for high school juniors and seniors? While this news story is from Tampa, it rings true across the country. Welders are in high demand.

Industries that rely on welders and mechanical technicians are becoming more technical, so the education they receive is also evolving.

MAISD Superintendent Ron Simon (pictured on right) will be retiring at the end of this month. While we will miss him tremendously, it seems pretty obvious he is very happy to begin a new journey with more time for his family. He was all smiles at his celebration. Special thanks to Cory Smith for capturing a beautiful tribute in his honor.

MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — After nine years with the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District (MAISD), Superintendent Ron Simon is entering into retirement, confident the organization will continue as it did under his leadership.

Reality Store is such a fun event for students all over Montcalm County. It happens at all seven of our middle schools and provides an opportunity for students to learn about money management. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers throughout our communities who help make this event possible. Check out these pictures from Montabella Community Schools. If you are experiencing homelessness and you have children in school, ask about support services for your child. Every school district in the country is required by law to have a homeless services coordinator in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

During Michigan Homeless Awareness Month, we need to face the fact that homelessness doesn't always look like what we expect. In 2018, individuals in families, including young children, saw a dramatic increase in homelessness - 17% between 2016-2018.

Sesame Street took on the challenge of family homelessness by introducing a homeless character and creating these amazing resources for helping families cope with this traumatic experience. https://sesamestreetincommunities.org/topics/family-homelessness/

Michigan continues to climb in the rankings of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading test, as released today by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). It marks the second straight two year testing cycle in which Michigan has gained in the national rankings.

“MAISA is pleased to be mentioned among those contributing to Michigan’s improvement in reading,” said MAISA Executive Director, Dr. William Miller. “In its role, MAISA’s Early Literacy Task Force, a sub-committee of the General Education Leadership Network (GELN) representing Michigan’s 56 intermediate school districts (ISDs), is focused on providing research-based literacy learning for educators.”

MAISD is proud to be leading this work with our Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) colleagues across the state in order to positively impact Michigan's students!

A career focus

Montcalm County manufacturers welcomed almost 400 students into their facilities last week during Discover Manufacturing. This event is an opportunity for students to explore careers in manufacturing and the skilled trades. Many thanks to almost 20 companies for showcasing many great careers that are found right here in our hometowns. This story highlights the day spent at Quad Graphics learning about the printing industry.

GREENVILLE — Having passed by manufacturers numerous times as a student, viewing as an outsider from the window of a car, Owen Rickle, 15, was always curious as to what was occurring within the walls of local industry.

Peer to Peer programs are successful in schools throughout Montcalm County. These programs have tremendous impact for our students. They help us all realize that, in spite of our differences, we are all very much the same.

This is a peek at our Peer-to-Peer program. High school students are choosing to make a difference by helping their peers succeed! Thank you, Mr. Champion, for coming back to Montabella after retiring to keep the program going. These kids are building relationships that will last a lifetime.
