HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF STANTON

The Town of Stanton began with the coming of the Memphis & Oh

io Railroad to the Stanton Depot in the 1830s on what had previously been Chickasaw land, but was then owned by Joseph Stanton. The Town of Stanton originally had its first charter in the 1880s but the charter was soon abolished. Stanton received a new charter in 1927 and is mostly a farming community today with a population of about 600 people. The original town that became Stanton was called Wesley, and was located 4 miles east of the current Town of Stanton. When Joseph Blackwell Stanton moved to this area, although he also owned land in Wesley, he negotiated for the emergence of the Memphis & Ohio Railroad on Stanton property where the town of Stanton now stands. The result was Stanton's Depot, which began the movement of businesses from Wesley to Stanton. The school, businesses, and churches in the village of Wesley moved to Stanton Depot, Tennessee, in 1856, turning the once thriving Wesley into a ghost town. The town of Stanton is named for Joseph Blackwell Stanton who moved to Stanton's present location in the 1830s with his wife Lucy and their only child, Grace, who married Nathan Adams, a stockholder in the Nashville & Memphis Railroad. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stantontnhistory

The Town of Stanton is proud to announce the arrival of its first police vehicle, a fully equipped 2026 Ford Police Interceptor Utility, made possible through an investment by Ford Community Relations as part of Ford's Good Neighbor Plan.

The vehicle will serve as the primary patrol unit for the Stanton Police Department, which was formally established in 2025. The addition of the vehicle marks an important milestone in the Town's continued commitment to public safety and community service.

Public Safety is one of the key pillars of Ford's Good Neighbor Plan, reflecting Ford's commitment to the safety and well-being of communities surrounding the Tennessee Truck Plant. Through this investment, Ford Community Relations has helped equip the Stanton Police Department to serve a growing community.

"As Stanton continues to grow, the safety and well-being of our residents remains a top priority," said Mayor Norman Bauer Jr. "We are grateful to Ford Community Relations for this investment in our community. This vehicle strengthens our ability to provide professional public safety services while helping us build a safe and welcoming community for residents and visitors alike."

Police Chief Nigel Peeples expressed his appreciation for the investment and enthusiasm for the department's future.

"I am honored to serve the residents of Stanton and look forward to utilizing this vehicle as we continue building strong relationships within the community," said Chief Peeples. "This vehicle provides an important tool to help us serve effectively, respond to community needs, and ensure Stanton remains a safe place to live, work, and visit."

The establishment of the Stanton Police Department and acquisition of its first patrol vehicle are part of the Town's broader efforts to enhance municipal services and prepare for the opportunities associated with continued growth throughout the region.
