🚑 Building a Stronger Emergency Response System for Haywood County 🚑

Last night at our public safety meeting, we had the privilege of recognizing two of our newest Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs). While this recognition was important, it is only the beginning of what we believe will be great things to come.

These two individuals, Brent and Kelly Grimison Stanley, have been licensed for only 9 days and have already responded to 4 emergency calls within their district. Because of their dedication and willingness to serve, first medical contact times in their area have been reduced by an incredible 65%. That means citizens are receiving trained medical care significantly faster during emergencies when every second matters.

This program has been a top priority for Haywood County EMS because our citizens deserve the quickest possible access to emergency medical care. We fully support, oversee, and stand behind this program. Kaitlin McKeel is doing a great job of instructing and coordinating with this program. We have also expanded our instructor pool to provide to this program now as well.

Many people do not realize what it takes to become an EMR. Participants must complete:

✅ 60 hours of classroom instruction
✅ Medical skills labs and hands-on training
✅ Ride-along requirements with Haywood County EMS crews
✅ State certification and licensing requirements
✅ Patient care documentation (PCRs) just like our ambulance crews
✅ Ongoing oversight, auditing, and quality assurance

Each responder is equipped with medical bags and equipment provided by Haywood County EMS and is integrated into our overall emergency response system.

This program was largely abandoned years ago, but we made a commitment to rebuild it. Our mission is not only to strengthen Haywood County EMS but also to expand emergency medical response capabilities throughout every community in Haywood County.

Today, we have 12 certified or licensed responders participating in the program, and we are continuing to grow. In addition, every member of the Haywood County Fire Department either holds a medical certification/license or is actively working toward obtaining one and falls under our EMR program.

We are proud of these responders and thankful for their commitment to serving their neighbors. This is what community-based emergency care looks like, and we're just getting started.

On Memorial Day, Haywood County Fire and Rescue pays tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by individuals who have given their lives protecting the nation's freedom.

Fire Explorer Anndee Huber, 16
Newcastle Fire Department. WY
Fire Explorer Huber was a passenger in a tanker responding to a rekindle of some railroad ties that had burned earlier in the day. As the tanker responded on a gravel road, the right wheels of the apparatus left the roadway, the driver overcorrected to the left, and the tanker rolled over. Fire Explorer Huber was partially ejected in the rollover and pinned between the ground and the passenger’s door. Responding firefighters used extrication equipment to provide access to Fire Explorer Huber and remove her from under the vehicle. Fire Explorer Huber was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. Fire Explorer Huber was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Fire Explorer Huber drowned in water from the overturned tanker that collected in the ditch as the apparatus laid on its side. The driver of the apparatus was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He had a history of alcohol abuse and had been seen in a local bar 15 minutes prior to the response. His blood alcohol level after the crash was found to be .16 percent, twice the legal limit. The driver was convicted of DUI and sentenced to 14 to 18 years in prison.

NEWS ALERT: Working alongside the Brownsville Police Department, we're seeking the public's help in the ongoing investigation into a shooting at a park in West Tennessee.

On Friday evening, Brownsville officers responded to a park in the 900 block of Key Corner Street, where they located five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All five were transported to a local hospital, where one was later pronounced deceased.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with pictures or video of the incident, witnesses to the shooting, or anyone with knowledge that might be helpful to investigators should contact 1-800-TBI-FIND. You can also email [email protected].

Lord, we come before you, once again, after another shooting... receive into your loving care the souls of those who were killed, to care for those who were wounded or hurt in any way, to console the family members and friends of those who died or were wounded. Amen

Such a sad time in our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families in this tragic time.
