⚠️Wilson County’s Southeast and Southwest Water Districts are now under Stage 2, Mandatory Reductions I of the Wilson County Water Shortage Response Plan due to the continued severe drought conditions. NOTE: This does not include City of Wilson, NC - Government water customers.

Here’s what this means and we need everyone’s help:

🔴 Restrictions are no longer voluntary
🔴 Reduce your water use by about 10% compared to last month’s usage;
🔴 Limit lawn and landscape irrigation to ½” per week between 8PM and 8AM
🔴 No washing of driveways or sidewalks
🔴 All testing and training purposes requiring drinking water (e.g. fire protection) will be limited

While not mandatory, we recommend that you don’t wash personal vehicles at home at this time. It’s been several years since we‘ve had a drought this severe and we’re asking everyone to do what they can to make it less severe by being conscious of water use and limiting it as much as possible. These steps help protect our water supply for what matters most. Is it inconvenient? Absolutely. Increased Risk of Wildfire Due to Elevated Fire Danger -- Thursday, June 18, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued fire danger statements for central and eastern North Carolina. What does increased fire danger mean for you today?

🎯 Fires can start from the smallest spark.
🎯 Dry conditions and wind increase fire spread.
🎯 Everyday activities carry more risk right now.

Avoid burning, and be cautious with anything that could cause a spark. Properly dispose of smoking materials such as ci******es. Be extremely careful with machinery and farm equipment when working outdoors.

Heads up, Stantonsburg neighbors — the Town is flushing water lines on Sand Pit Road.

If you live in or around that area, you may notice temporary water discoloration or a short drop in water pressure while crews are working. This is normal and should clear up quickly.

Hydrant flushing helps keep our water system working properly and supports good water quality throughout town.

Keep in mind you may need to flush your own water lines to clear up the water.

How to Clear Your Lines: Run a cold-water tap (preferably an outdoor spigot or basement tub) at full force for 10 to 15 minutes until the water runs completely clear.

If you notice smoke from a distance, it is likely a controlled burn conducted by a farmer to clear their property. We understand that some residents may be concerned about the smoke drifting over the town, but please be assured that everything is under control. Farmers undertake these burns annually.

Station 3 was dispatched to a structure fire church street with a possible person trapped inside the house. Upon arrival, Engine 31 advised that everyone was out of the house. Fire is under investigation. The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.
