Please join us in congratulating and honoring the actions of these three BCSO Deputies. Sergeant Hannah Haas, Master Deputy Frankie Krol and Master Deputy Michael Garmon received the American Police Hall of Fame Silver Star for Bravery Award on 06/17/2020. Sheriff Gordon Smith led the ceremony and presented them this distinguished award. This Award for Bravery is the highest award that can be achieved through the American Police Hall of Fame. These three deputies earned the award by the actions they took on the night on March 20th , 2020. The squad of Deputies responded to a physical altercation between two individuals that involved gun shots heard from inside the home. This emergency was called into 911 by a neighbor. Upon arrival the deputies began a call out procedure to the occupants of the home while preparing themselves for an emergency rescue entry is necessary. Moments later active gunfire was heard from inside the home. The Deputies made an immediate entry into the home to save life. Sgt. Haas, MD Krol and MD Garmon entered the kitchen area of the home where they encountered two adult males. They observed that one of the individuals was holding a handgun. The deputies assessed and ordered the individual to drop the firearm. The individual complied and dropped the handgun to the floor. Both individuals were then restrained in handcuffs making the situation safe without injury to anyone. Investigation revealed that the individual holding the firearm had indeed fired multiple shots from the weapon; however, it was in self defense from his adult son who was actively assaulting him. No one was shot during the incident. It is without question that the professionalism, dedication to training and bravery of these Deputies saved life on that night. We honor Sergeant Hannah Haas, Master Deputy Frankie Krol and Master Deputy Michael Garmon for their courage and professional ability displayed. Thank you for your service!!

06/14/2020

Today we recognize Flag Day, a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption, June 14.

What we know fondly as the “Stars and Stripes” was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, in the midst of the Revolutionary War. Colonial troops fought under many different flags with various symbols—rattlesnakes, pine trees, and eagles—and slogans—”Don’t Tread on Me,” “Liberty or Death,” and “Conquer or Die,” to name a few.

The Declaration of Independence made the adoption of an American flag necessary. Previously, each colony or special interest had its own flag.

On the 14th of June, Congress made the following resolution: “The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field …” Official announcement of the new flag was not made until Sept. 3, 1777. "We Care"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: County Burn Ban is rescinded

Effective at 3:00 pm today, the Burn Ban in place for Bradford County is hereby lifted, according to Lt. Raymond Shuford, County Emergency Management Director.

"With the significant rainfall we've received over the last few days, we feel comfortable in removing burning restrictions," said Lt. Shuford. "However it is critical that everyone follow State and County guidelines for outdoor burning."

Areas of Bradford County received nearly 5 inches of rain over the last 72 hours, indirectly related to Tropical Storm Cristobal that moved across the Gulf of Mexico. That, coupled with the afternoon showers and storms expected during the summer months, led to the decision.

The burning must occur between the hours of 9:00 AM until one hour before sunset. The location of the open burn must be set back at least 150 feet from any occupied building other than that of the landowner, and 50 feet from any paved public roadway. The fire must also be at least 25 feet from any wildlands, brush or combustible structure.

Preparations are underway to temporarily move our Communications Center into the Emergency Operations Center for a couple of weeks as new and improved software and hardware are being installed in the Communications Center. This project has been worked on for the past two years and is being funded by the State of Florida after Sheriff Smith applied for the appropriation of approximately $700,000.00. The current equipment has been used for almost two decades and the new technology will greatly enhance the communications for all of Bradford County.
