HAPPENING TONIGHT

REMINDER – A second City wide power outage is scheduled for this TUESDAY MORNING May 5, 2020 from 12:05AM to 2:00AM – but it could last as late as 2:30 AM depending on any damage or issues discovered. This date and time have been reviewed with all parties, including Bradford County Emergency Management, to minimize any impact to COVID-19 response.

The first one was the first of three planned outages to replace old and degraded equipment. This outage will be the second step to assure storms, squirrels and other outage causes are minimized. We understand the inconvenience, but these outages scheduled now mean less risk of a massive outage lasting much longer, giving everyone a stronger and more dependable electrical delivery system.

We have scheduled this work to provide the least amount of potential impact, while most everyone is asleep, but we strongly recommend all unnecessary items, including computers, electronics and the like be unplugged before going to sleep and then plugged in again when you wake up. Again, to minimize any potential damage. While we do not anticipate any such issues, we prefer to err on the side of caution.

Anyone with any questions can call City Hall at 904-964-5027 or send us a message and we will get the answers you need!

A reminder - The City wide power outage is scheduled for this Monday morning April 20, 2020 from 12:05AM to 2:00AM. This date and time have been reviewed with all parties, including Bradford County Emergency Management, to minimize any impact to COVID-19 response.

We have identified six -1200-amp switches that will need to be replaced as part of the project at the Call Street substation near the hospital. Without these upgrades the chances of an unplanned power outage remain high and we are taking these steps to improve service and safety.

Today we recognize a huge milestone in our city's history. Today marks the 150th birthday of the City of Starke.

Starke was established in 1857 when a railroad line connecting Fernandina to Cedar Key was built. Since Starke was the midpoint, trains regularly stopped here for refueling and other reasons. The city was incorporated on April 4th, 1870: 150 years ago today.

Two versions of the naming of this city ascribe the name to two different persons. The Bradford County Telegraph, in a 75th Anniversary Edition on November 12, 1954 said, “Since the earliest residents of the little village included more people from South Carolina than any other state, it is not surprising that the town was called Starke in honor of Madison Starke Perry, governor of Florida from 1857-1861. Governor Perry was born in South Carolina in 1814 and his mother was a member of the prominent Starke family of that state.” The other version says the town was named for Thomas Starke, also of South Carolina, who was a prominent railroad man who helped develop areas of north Florida during the 19th century.

The original town encompassed 40 acres and much has certainly changed in the 150 years since Starke sprang up as a wide spot among the pines and oaks of North Florida. But one thing has remained consistent... Neighbor helping neighbor, a smile and wave as you pass by, and the dedicated "can do" spirit of our residents.

We may have had to cancel our celebration this weekend, as well as the Strawberry Festival, due to the current health crisis and Local State of Emergency... but there is still plenty to celebrate as we go through the rest of the year.

Happy 150th Birthday, everyone!

NO "BLOCK PARTY" ALLOWED TONIGHT

Individuals have advertised on FaceBook a “Block Party” to be held on Old Lawtey Rd. tonight. There will be no such party. Law Enforcement will however be very much present there and throughout Bradford County. As you know we are under a National, State and Local Emergency due to the Corona COVID-19 Virus. Our Florida Governor has issued Executive Order 20-83 which orders a health advisory against social or recreational gatherings of more than 10 people.
Also, members of this community have complained about such parties. We will protect the community against public disturbance. The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office along with the Starke Police Department will enforce the Florida Laws regarding a “Block Party” on Old Lawtey Rd. or anywhere else the community is disturbed. Several Florida Laws particular to this type of event include: Statute 877.03 Breach of Peace, Statute 316.1945 Parking or stopping in the roadway, 562.111 Possession of alcoholic beverages by person under age 21.
This is a horrible time to plan a “Block Party.” Reconsider. “We Care”

Hi I hope you can help me as I’ve tried every avenue but am getting nowhere. I ordered a pair of in ear monitors for my son from a company JLA custom that it run by a Lee Jacobson who lives in Starke. Although being given many promises I have still not received any delivery and he is now ignoring all communications from me. I am in Scotland and have no idea how I would go about reporting this so hoped you could point me in the right direction. I‘ve also found out that there are a number of others who have placed orders with this company and not received their goods. One is in New Zealand. i have done some digging and discovered Mr Jacobson is also associated with a company Brevard Sound Systems. If you could advise me how I could report this to the appropriate authorities I would be very grateful.
Boy, they are keeping y'all busy. Stay safe in this weather.
Oh my!!
Thank you for your service
To Starke Police Department Your Police Department, Your Emergency Manage System and Responders are well trained. I love the feeling of safety that We have here in Starke, Florida. Thanks for everything that you do.
Actually checking on and arresting people when they’re reported for animal cruelty
Identification theft is getting bad. I keep getting alerts that my address has been changed by the post office because a change of address form has been filled out and because of that my address was changed on one of my credit cards and I had to call the credit card company. But the post office said they didn't cause that. Just be aware it's getting easier to steal information.
Going South on Highway 301, is it legal to turn LEFT on Call Street?
Huge shout to Officer Micah Cheramie, who came out during all the rain and helped us change a flat!!! I was passing through on my way home to Tampa, and didn’t have jack. He let us use his. It was such a huge blessing!
I would just like to thank the officer who helped me carry nine pizzas to my car today for the middle school choir. I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name because I was running late but I truly appreciate the help. So if you were at Little Caesar’s around 11:25 thank you so much!
