"Throwback Thursday: In mid-November 2021, a unique re-enlistment ceremony took place in the Camp Blanding Museum Memorial Gardens. While re-enlistments happen regularly at Camp Blanding, the November ceremony was unique because it involved the U.S. Navy.

Sonar Technician Petty Officer Second Class (STG2) Anthony Nordwall chose Camp Blanding for his Navy re-enlistment because the Nordwall family has a strong connection with Camp Blanding.

The Nordwall family story begins with STG2 Nordwall's great grandfather, Antoine Nordwall. An emigrant from Sweden, Antoine Nordwall grew up in Minnesota. Antoine Nordwall enlisted in the U.S. Army and in World War I, he fought in France, where he was a casualty of poison gas. After recovering, Antoine Nordwall returned to Minnesota and married Rose Marie Lussier, a native American of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians of Minnesota. The Nordwalls had a total of eight children, five boys and three girls.

After World War I, Antoine Nordwall continued to suffer from the World War I gassing, and he had a much weakened immune system. In 1935, he was involved in a work accident; his injuries became infected, then gangrenous. While trying to reach a hospital in Minneapolis, Antoine died.

Antoine's sons were then sent to the Pipestone Boarding School. The oldest son, Stanley Anthony Nordwall, was responsible for ensuring he and his brothers behaved. In June 1942, Stanley Nordwall left the Boarding School and registered for Selective Service, and he was inducted into the Army in November 1942. Stanley volunteered for the paratroopers and was sent to Camp
Blanding for training with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. After completing jump training at Fort Benning and advanced training at Camp Mackall, Stanley Nordwall and the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment moved to England. The 508th jumped into Normandy on 6 June 1944, jumped into the Netherlands for Operation Market-Garden, fought in the Battle of the Bulge
and fought through Germany to the end of World War II.

Recognizing the family's connection to Camp Blanding, STG2 Anthony Nordwall, the grandson of Stanley Anthony Nordwall, chose the 508th PIR marker in the Camp Blanding Museum gardens. The Nordwall connection to Camp Blanding represents the family's continuing service to the United States.

The Camp Blanding Museum is open daily from 1200 to 1600 hours. Admission is free, and the Museum looks forward to sharing more stories of Camp Blanding's history.

Due to a software upgrade, we are experiencing issues making dependent ID cards. As such, we only have the ability to make chipped CAC's. All appointments for Dependent, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Retiree, and Reserve Retirees must be rescheduled; these include initial issue dependent cards.

Also, please take note of the following changings to replacement dependent ID card requirements:

All new dependent cards will be the new Next Gen chip-free cards. In order for a new card to be issued a new or replacement card, dependents must meet the following criteria:

Turning 65 years of age
Lost card
Initial issuance
Turning 21 years of age

Existing dependent/retired/DAV ID cards that expired in the year 2020 have been extended and are good until summer 2021. After this period, NGB will provide guidance on when we are to begin issuing the NEXT GEN ID card to those categories.

Florida Army National Guard Soldiers actions saves lives, saves property

By CW2 Terri Griffis November 9, 2020

It was an ordinary Thursday evening on November 5, 2020 at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. 1SG Hector Rodriguez & SFC Richard Carinci, both guests at Rozar Lodge while attending training, were on scene when a glow was observed coming from an outside ice machine. SFC Carinci immediately took action, extinguishing the fire starting at the base, reaching up to the rafters. While SFC Carinci was fighting the fire, 1SG Rodriguez called 911 and immediately began evacuating occupants, two of whom were sleeping. Subsequently, 1SG Rodriguez joined SFC Carinci until Clay County Fire Rescue arrived ensuring the fire did not restart. By the time Clay County Fire Rescue arrived, the fire was extinguished and all occupants were evacuated without injury.

To hear it from the heroes point of view they considered themselves doing their job, doing what had to be done to help others out of danger’s way amid the risks. What these two brave Soldiers should realize is that by “doing their job” they saved someone’s son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild, sister, brother, mother or father. Their heroic actions also preserved thousands of dollars of property.

When asked if this was their first firefight, 1SG Rodriguez, a former correctional officer, used his years of training and experience in evacuating occupants to safety. SFC Carinci fought a fire once as a child, but only by trial and error. He mentioned that his recent OSHA safety training conducted with the FLNG Safety Team was extremely helpful and would play a huge role in increasing safety culture within his organization.

Joe Gerard, Camp Blanding Fire Prevention Specialist, observed the damages the following morning and in his report commented how the aluminum soffits played a positive role in fire resistance. If plastic or vinyl soffits had been used in construction the outcome could have been worse. Damages, other than the ice machine, was the aluminum soffit and a small section of the rafter. The ice machine is currently being surveyed to determine the cause of the malfunction.

You never know when a fire will break out, that’s why you must always be prepared and take steps to reduce the risks. Follow the three “P’s” – prevent, plan, and practice. Visit the State Safety GKO site for fire prevention training aids @ https://gko.portal.ng.mil/states/FL/AVS/Safety/SitePages/Home.aspx
Fire and Emergency Services would like to welcome a new member to the Camp Blanding Wildland Fire team. No official name has been chosen yet.
