Here is the 2018 United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Bull Simon's Award video for retired Sgt. Maj. Dennis E. Wolfe, the lifetime achievement award recognizes recipients who embody “the true #spirit, #values, and #skills of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) warrior.”
Brig. Gen. James Bonner shared his thoughts on Sgt. Maj. Wolfe who is known as the "Father of EOD" for Special Operations.
"When we talk about weapons of mass destruction we are talking about chemical, biological, nuclear, it can be radiological, it can have an explosive element to it and when you look at an explosive ordnance disposal technician it takes about one year to go through #EOD school, just to be able to work basic EOD problems. Then if you are fortunate to be assigned to the special mission unit, the training plan Dennis incorporated with the national lab takes another year of training before you are ready for a role in the special mission unit. That is the level of expertise and capability that Dennis was able to build." 52nd Ordnance Group - EOD 71st Ordnance Group (EOD) 48th Chemical Brigade United States Army Ordnance Corps Fort A.P. For the first time since 2001, NO current names are being added to the EOD Memorial wall this year. This is a tremendous blessing for the EOD community that we have all been hoping for for years. However, the names of 12 EOD technicians are being added from WWII, Vietnam and Grenada. We are deeply honored to recognize these heroes as they now stand among the 338 fallen on the wall. The 221st is grateful as always to have our unit members gathered together to commemorate their sacrifice and celebrate their spirit. WE REMEMBER.

Our entire unit was privileged and honored to spend this drill at Eglin AFB, FL. Saturday marked the 48th Annual Explosive Ordnance Disposal Memorial ceremony, followed by the 49th Annual EOD Memorial Ball Saturday evening. All unit members attended the Memorial Ceremony and most attended the ball. It was an incredible opportunity to honor the 326 EOD technicians that are forever enshrined on the wall and in our hearts and minds. Six names were added to the wall this year. Two from recent events and four others from WWII and the Vietnam era. It's truly profound to recognize the incredible line of heroism that runs from the formation of the Bomb Disposal field to this very moment. EOD is the first truly joint field were members from all four services consider themselves members of the EOD family first, before considering the differences in their uniforms. WE REMEMBER.
We wish to thank the 83rd Troop Command for suporting our unit, and making this possible. As far as we know, we are the only National Guard EOD Company to ever attend the memorial as a whole company.

Congratulations to SGT Trevor Kruwel for graduating the Urban Mobility Breaching Course! UMBC is a solid, total breaching program that addresses the spectrum of Methods Of Entry techniques. These MOE include Mechanical, Ballistic, Thermal and Explosive Breaching. The course builds the overall explosive technical expertise of EOD technicians and makes them more tactically versatile on the battlefield. UMBC is also a "train the trainer" program and is
intended to produce breaching SMEs that can pass their knowledge on to their units. We look forward to SGT Kruwel enhancing our overall training program and sending more attendees in the future.

1SG Weber and SFC Masey participated in Operation Sandsnake 2017. An event sponsored by the American Airborne Group and the Round Canopy Sport Parachute Team. They performed several static line parachute jumps with US and Foreign military personnel and civilians. In a world of mediocrity, some choose to do the unreasonable simply for the joy of it, LOL! Best quote from 1SG Weber, "You have to hate yourself just a little to do static line" :) Phenomenal! Solid work.

Congratulations to SSG Broesch! He's been selected by the FL National Guard to compete at the Winston P. Wilson Marksmanship Match! The Winston P. Wilson is a National level competition for National Guard Marksmanship teams. The State has decided to send the top winning team of the 2017 FL TAG match and a composite team of the best overall individual shooters from our state to compete at the Winston P. Wilson match. SSG Broesch has been selected for this composite team. It's truly an honor to have a unit member from the 221st representing the FL National Guard at the National Level. Much like the Federal "President's Hundred" tab - the top 50 shooters from the match will be awarded the "Chiefs 50" Marksmanship badge, which is bestowed by the 4 Star Chief of the National Guard, the highest ranking officer in the Guard. Good luck, SSG Broesch!

Today was a solemn day as MAJ Redding was laid to rest. It was also a day for another bittersweet occasion. Today marked the last day of 1SG Albert G Wass de Czege's drilling time with our unit. 1SG Wass de Czege was a member of the Company from 22 OCT 1995 until 30 SEP 2016. He progressed from the rank of Specialist to First Sergeant. His time as an EOD team leader included operational deployments to Bosnia and in support of GWOT. He is also a veteran of the first gulf war where he proudly served as an Airborne Artilleryman. We as a unit can say without reservation that our unit maintains a reputation that is the envy of many. That legacy is the direct result of the amazing work of those that have come before. Among those are names like Bennefield, Fuchs, Kendrick, Barthelmes, Fields, Van Zant, and Redding to name just a few. 1SG Wass de Czege is now among those names. Future generations will emulate the example set for them. We are sincerely thankful for his fellowship and service with us. However, he was never alone in his service - we will sorely miss the presence of his wonderful wife Samantha. Additionally, we were privileged to watch the growth of his daughters Ilex and Amelia into amazing young ladies. Like all of you that have been with the unit through out it's history - he and they will always be a part of our family. Congratulations, 1SG. We wish you the very best in every endevour.

MAJ Gene Redding. Gone too soon.

09/07/2016

The 221st EOD is saddened beyond description to share the news of the untimely passing of MAJ Gene Redding. He was a beloved and greatly respected former Commander of our military family and he will always be remembered dearly as one of us. His time of leadership included the Company's first deployment in support of the War on Terror. MAJ Redding was above all a truly decent hearted man. He was a man of deep Christian faith, a faith that he grew up in and shared with his family. We hope that shared belief brings them comfort in this time of heartache. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Sir, and your family. We Remember.

Members of the 221st EOD participated in and supported the Florida SWAT Association's Tactical Emergency Medical Support course held at Camp Blanding this week. The annual class brings together Tactical Medical personnel from teams throughout Florida, neighboring States and Overseas. The intensive practical curriculum is based on the most current Tactical Combat Casualty Care principles and skills. The 221st was able to add to the material presented to attendees by conducting IED awareness classroom instruction and practical exercises. Students where also exposed to possible issues in the treatment and extraction of injured EOD technicians in the bomb suit. The TCCC skills honed during the class will be of direct benefit to unit readiness and training for real world missions, along with further developing our relationships with finest of the FL Public Safety community.
