Have you ever had the opportunity to tour the Eugene L. Matthews Historical Museum on Call Street? Last Thursday I had the opportunity to visit in search of early pictures and history of the City. We’re working on a broader article that will be coming out in the coming months and needed historical pictures and records. The Museum is a treasure trove of history, pictures, and artifacts. If you haven't been, I encourage you to visit when they’re open!

When you spend so much time around your co-workers, they become family. Please keep us and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

On Wednesday evening, March 11, 2025, we tragically lost one of our own. Cory Adams was a vibrant, kind, thoughtful, caring person. You probably saw him at least once a month at your house or business as he was in our meter department. We are grateful for the time we had with Cory and he will be sorely missed.

His service will be 2:00 pm tomorrow, March 15 at Victory Chapel located at 125 Church Street. Please keep his family and the City family in your thoughts and prayers.

We aren't alone in this as all electric providers are seeing large increases. I would ask that as you come to City Hall to pay your bill, please be kind and courteous to our employees.

Welcome to Starke, Coach!

Welcome to Starke, Coach!

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Coach Ross Baker is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he served as a student coach under Jim Tressel. He later earned his MBA from Marshall University while working as a Graduate Assistant.

Coach Baker transitioned to high school football 15 years ago and has coached in Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, and Georgia in assistant and head coaching roles. Most recently, he served as Co-Offensive Coordinator at Valdosta High School, helping lead the No. 1 offense in Class 6A. That unit accumulated more than 6,500 total yards and powered a regional championship and Final Four run.

Coach Baker’s coaching philosophy is simple: “Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” He believes in building fast (emphasis on fast), physical, and detail-oriented football teams. Do what it takes to build champions—because work wins.

Help us welcome Coach Baker!

Thank you everyone!

Thank you everyone!

Power should now be restored. Thank you to the Starke Utility Department, Starke Fire Department, Bradford County Fire and Rescue, and the Forestry Department for their hard work.

Water customers from SR16 at Market Road down to Weldon, may see an interruption in service. Crews are working on a water leak.

🏠 We’re All in This Together 🏠
With this rare Florida cold snap, our electric system is working overtime. Small changes at home can make a big difference for our entire community.
Residents are encouraged to: • Keep thermostats set at a steady temperature
• Use space heaters safely and sparingly
• Avoid overloading outlets or extension cords
• Reduce use of major appliances during peak hours when possible
Being mindful with electricity helps ensure our neighbors, seniors, and essential services across the City of Starke remain powered during this extreme cold weather.
From the desk of the City Clerk, thank you for doing your part to help our community. Please stay warm, stay safe, and be especially mindful of fire hazards while heating your home. 💙

It shouldn't feel like the mountains of Virginia in Florida! On a more serious note, please consider finding ways to conserve power costs. I will also say for the first time in 4.5 years, I do recommend letting your water faucet drip at night to prevent your water lines from freezing.

Over the next few days we will be experiencing very low temperatures. Lows in the lower 20s and highs in the 40s-50s. Due to this, natural gas prices doubled yesterday. Why does the natural gas price important you may ask? Over 80% of power generation in Florida is fueled by natural gas. At FMPA, they have implemented a program to limit exposure of market fluctuations such as what occurred yesterday, however there is still some exposure in the market. Unfortunately, this will result in a higher utility bill in both the usage due to the cold and fuel adjustment. What could you do to not see such a spike?

1. Lower your thermostat to 68° while home and adjust lower when you sleep or not at home.

2. Run ceiling fans clockwise in order to push warmer air down.

3. Close vents and doors in unused rooms

4. Lower the temperature on your hot water heater to 120°

5. Make sure your air filters are clean

6. Unplug unused electronics

7. Wash clothes in cold water

8. Open window shades on sun-facing windows.

These are just several different ways that will help reduce your usage.

I was able to attend this event earlier this week and some of the information presented was rather surprising. The country is divided into different electric areas that feature both public agencies such as FMPA and the municipal partners along with IOUs and cooperatives. One of the areas of concern was the shear amount of capacity needed. Take for instance Virginia where northern VA has the most data centers in the world. The economic principle of pricing based on supply and demand is very real. The entire state is feeling the price increases. I’m originally from the economically depressed mountains of the southwestern portion of Virginia and many of the everyday, normal residential customers 400 miles from NOVA are seeing $300-$600 monthly electric only bills. We are fortunate here in Florida that, while demand is growing at a fast pace, we are members of Florida Municipal Power Agency and own our own distribution system so we are able to have significantly lower bills than many parts of the country.
