Generator Safety Tips – Starkville Fire Department

During a power outage, generators can be helpful—but only when used safely. Please remember:
1. Run generators outside only — Never use a generator in a home, garage, or near doors and windows due to deadly carbon monoxide.
2. Keep generators at least 20 feet from buildings — Place them away from doors, windows, and vents.
3. Shut off the main breaker & prevent backfeeding — Turn off your home’s main breaker when using a generator and never plug it into a wall outlet. Use extension cords or a properly installed transfer switch to keep power from feeding back onto utility lines and protect utility workers.
4. Turn generators off before refueling — Let the unit cool completely to prevent fires.
5. Avoid overloading — Use outdoor-rated extension cords and only power essential items.

Now is the time to start preparing. Don’t wait till last minute.

1. Prepare for Power Outages
• Charge phones, battery packs, and medical devices.
• Have flashlights (not just candles), extra batteries, and a battery-powered radio.
• If you use a generator, never run it indoors or in a garage.
2. Stock Essential Supplies
• At least 3 days of food and water per person (non-perishable, easy to prepare).
• Medications, first-aid kit, baby or pet supplies if needed.
• Extra blankets, warm clothing, hats, and gloves.
3. Protect Your Home & Pipes
• Let faucets drip slightly to prevent frozen pipes.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air in.
• Know how to shut off your main water valve in case a pipe bursts.
4. Prepare Your Vehicle
• Fill up your gas tank before the storm hits.
• Keep an emergency kit in your car: blankets, flashlight, ice scraper, jumper cables, food, and water.
• Avoid travel during ice storms—ice is far more dangerous than snow.
5. Stay Informed & Plan Ahead
• Monitor weather alerts and local emergency updates.
• Have a family communication plan if power or cell service goes down.
• Check on elderly neighbors or those who may need help—

We had an awesome training led by MedStat last night along with SturgisVFD, Adaton-Self Creek VFD, and District 5 VFD. Atlas Towing of Columbus provided us with some cars and we simulated a 2 car wreck and multiple agencies were involved. We were all able to get some effective training. We want to thank MedStat and Pafford ambulance services, Oktibbeha Co Sheriff Dept., Oktibbeha Co 911, Oktibbeha Co EMA, AirCare, and Baptist/OCH for helping. We also want to thank Supervisors Pattie Little and Ben Carver for coming and showing support. We are always looking for ways to get better so we can serve our county better.

We are thankful for the volunteer fire departments that show up for mutual aid and work well together. Thankful for the Sturgis Volunteer FD, AdatonFD, Maben FD Oktibbeha Sheriff’s Dept, Forestry commission, and EMA as well. Notice all the trucks- this is how the county gets water to a fire.
