We hope everyone takes a few minutes to remember loved ones who are no longer with us as this weekend kicks off the official start to Summer.

This holiday should have as much if not more meaning to each and every one of us who have said goodbye to a friend or family member.

The second area we received a request to study for concerns regarding speed was on the West side of the elementary school between Main Street and 4th Street SW.

Between May 2 and May 20, a total of 18, 349 vehicles were counted traveling in this area.

The average speed of all vehicles was 21.5 miles per hour and the average speed of vehicles exceeding the speed limit was 29.1 mph.

This data reflects drivers in the area are extremely aware of the school traffic and the highest speeds recorded happened well outside of school hours.

Thanks to everyone who buckles up and slows down, we appreciate your efforts to be good partners on the roads.

Recently, there has been discussion about excessive speeding in a few areas.

A 20-day study of vehicles in the 400 blk of 2nd Avenue NW showed 2,144 vehicles passed by our speed sign with an average speed of 18.7 miles per hour.

There were 2 vehicles with an abnormally high rate of speed, the first was a vehicle speeding, the second was the officer catching the vehicle, both of which occurred in the early morning hours when there was little vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

Come on out and support a great cause.

Local law enforcement officers will take fundraising efforts to new heights during the annual “Cop on a Rooftop” event benefiting Special Olympics Iowa on Thursday, May 15, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Dunkin'.

Community members are invited to stop by, meet local officers, and support Iowa athletes participating in Special Olympics programs and competitions throughout the year. All funds raised during the event stay in Iowa and directly benefit Special Olympians across the state.

In previous years, “Cop on a Rooftop” events across Iowa have raised more than $275,000 to support Special Olympics athletes and programs statewide. Marshalltown is one of 24 participating locations throughout Iowa taking part in this year’s fundraising effort.

The Marshalltown location has consistently been one of the top fundraising sites in the state. Organizers credit the continued success to the outstanding support and engagement from the Marshalltown community, whose generosity has helped make a lasting impact for Iowa athletes.

Donations can be made on-site with cash or by scanning a QR code available at the event. As a thank-you for supporting the fundraiser, participants will receive a coupon for a free donut or coffee, redeemable during a future visit to Dunkin’.

“Cop on a Rooftop” is a fun and impactful partnership between law enforcement, local businesses, and community members working together to support athletes of all abilities and promote inclusion through sports.

Community members are encouraged to stop by, make a donation, and help support Iowa Special Olympics athletes.
