Memorial Day is one of my favorite weekends here in Centre County. From carnivals and community celebrations to parades and family get-togethers, it marks the unofficial start of summer.
But most importantly, this holiday is a solemn reminder to honor those who gave everything in defense of our country. And here in District 82 — home to Boalsburg, the Birthplace of Memorial Day — communities come together to remember those who left the comfort of home and ultimately made the highest sacrifice for our liberty.
This year’s observance carries special significance as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Since our founding, brave Americans have fought and died to defend the freedoms we enjoy and preserve a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Their sacrifice stands as a lasting reminder that freedom is never free.
I believe this Memorial Day also calls us to recapture our spirit and unity as Americans. We should be people and leaders who seek to unite rather than divide. And as we look ahead to our country’s future, may we remember the sacrifices that built and sustained it — and recommit ourselves to the ideals for which so many gave their lives.
Wishing you and your family a meaningful and safe Memorial Day.
