Since the Hong Kong protests broke out in June 2019, and especially after the enactment of the draconian Hong Kong National Security Law in July 2020, many Hongkongers — including some of our members — were forced to flee our homes in order to avoid political persecution. When writing social media posts could be subject to three years and seven months in jail, chanting slogans in malls five and a half years in jail, and waving a flag nine years in jail, many of us have no choice but to continue our fight for freedom abroad.
President Biden announced the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) policy in 2021 to protect Hongkongers in US from political persecution. However, the DED policy is set to expire on Feb 5, 2023, in less than three weeks. Without the continuation of the DED policy, Hongkongers could be deported back to Hong Kong, where we will face decades of imprisonment. We could even be persecuted in Hong Kong based on our actions and voices while in the US, undermining our freedom of speech in this nation.
We hope you can join us in urging President Biden and our representatives to renew and expand the DED policy for Hongkongers. Email templates can be found in the bio of . Thank you!
