College Township Council recognizes that the safety and well-being of the community is strengthened by employees who demonstrate exceptional initiative, courage, and dedication to public service.

On August 14, 2026, while performing their assigned duties in Mountainside Park, Public Works employees Hunter Shawver and Greg Gummo observed smoke emanating from a nearby property on Matilda Avenue. Recognizing the potential danger, Mr. Shawver and Mr. Gummo immediately left their work area and proceeded to the scene, where they discovered a lawn tractor fully engulfed in flames adjacent to a garage, with the fire beginning to spread to the structure.

Mr. Gummo immediately contacted 911 and provided emergency personnel with notification of the fire, while Mr. Shawver located a nearby garden hose and, without hesitation, began actively fighting the fire. Through their prompt actions, sound judgment, teamwork, and willingness to place themselves in harm's way, Mr. Shawver and Mr. Gummo substantially knocked down the fire and helped prevent its further spread while awaiting the arrival of emergency responders.

Upon their arrival, firefighters from Alpha Fire Company recognized the significant assistance provided by Mr. Shawver and Mr. Gummo and indicated that, without their immediate intervention, the incident could have had a much different and substantially more serious outcome, including potentially significant damage to the garage and surrounding property.

The actions of Mr. Shawver and Mr. Gummo exemplify the highest ideals of municipal service and demonstrate that the responsibilities of a public employee extend beyond the ordinary performance of assigned duties when the safety of residents and protection of property are at stake.

Update to paving projects in College Township

Inclement weather has delayed the original paving schedule. Contractor, Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc., has given the following updated/tentative schedule:

Hospital Drive

*Monday, 9/14 Mill off two inches (2”) of the existing asphalt and placement of one-half inch (1/2”) scratch course
*Tuesday, 9/15 Placement of final wearing surface.
ALL WORK WILL BEGIN AFTER 8:00 PM

9/8 – Scratch (leveling) Course
9/8 thru 9/11 – UAJA to adjust manholes

New this season, Orchard Road will be used as the primary access route to Mount Nittany Medical Center during home football game traffic patterns.

Here’s what to know:

From the intersection of Puddintown Road and Orchard Road, the right lane on Orchard Road will be designated for Mount Nittany Medical Center patient and staff access northbound to Park Avenue.
At the same intersection, the left lane on Orchard Road will run northbound to the entrance of Parking Lot 33.
Vehicles may continue to travel southbound from Park Avenue to Lot 33 as usual, but they will not be able to proceed farther south than Lot 33.
This traffic pattern will be in place on Saturday mornings through the end of the game, consistent with other football game-day traffic adjustments.

Living In One Neighborhood (LION) Bash returns on Thursday!

Join fellow community members and head to Downtown State College from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, for LION Bash, an annual community resource fair and block party.

LION Bash takes place on the 100–300 blocks of South Allen Street and is open to all. Enjoy an evening filled with entertainment, activities, resources from community and Penn State organizations, and plenty of opportunities to connect with your neighbors.
