Nittany Valley Charter School

Nittany Valley Charter School The Nittany Valley Charter School is a public environmental charter school in central PA serving K-6.

Nittany Valley Charter School opened its doors to students in grades 1-8 in September of 1998. This was only the second year that charter schools were in existence in Pennsylvania. Since that date, the school has continued to offer individualized learning opportunities to students in the State College Area district. The original charter was renewed in 2001 for a five-year period and again in 2006

for another five years and we now offer a free, public school education for grades Kindergarten through 8th. Nittany Valley Charter School received a charter as a pre-existing school. It had been founded as a small, private academy by Carolyn Maroncelli with the financial support of the Colkitt family. When Act 22, the charter school law, was passed in 1997, the staff and families of Nittany Valley Academy decided that reorganizing as a charter school would enable the school to share its unique learning opportunities with more families. Once approved, the student body increased from 24 students to 48. The school quickly outgrew its original home on Sandy Drive, moved to a temporary location on Science Park Road, and now is in its permanent home at 1612 Norma Street. The academyโ€™s original goal of providing an education tailored to the whole childโ€™s needs and incorporating a strong environmental component has become the core of the charter schoolโ€™s mission. Parental participation and involvement in our community were added to the original goals and now provide the framework for all curriculum and activities at Nittany Valley Charter School.

Did you know that we help collect cereal boxes and now old calendars too?? In our continued efforts to be good stewards of the earth, and community minded, we encourage your student to bring these items in all year long. Our collection box is located next to our other recycling items, in the kitchen.

Jabebo is now accepting old calenders as well as cereal boxes! We will be making these into giftboxes that will be free with your purchase of earrings! Thank you so much for saving your cereal boxes!

We had the pleasure of hearing from a local artist, and alum, during this year's . You can find Erica Hummer at booth B-13 on Burrowes. So many of our students were completely captivated by her artwork but more importantly by what she shared about her journey to becoming an artist. You can learn more about her work at: https://arts-festival.com/artists/mixed-media-2d/erica-hummer

It's a to reflect on our spring campout at Camp Golden Pond. We had a tiered camping experience this year that every student really got into! Thanks to Tnails for their generous donation to our "luxury" campers and to all of the families that made it possible for the "survivors" to thrive! Meanwhile, our "classic" campers got the best of both worlds with a dash of luxury and a pinch of survival style fun.

In the fall our students visited the Bellefonte Art Museum as a part of a field trip experience. They were very interested in the Underground Railroad display that is a permanent exhibit there. Many students spent the winter months learning more about the history of the and earned a National Park Service junior ranger badge for their hard work!

Today's rain did not slow our Girls on the Run International participants down! We had a great morning at our first GOTR 5K. Girls from 3 different local schools had amazing PSU student coaches this spring and it all came together for a fun and supportive experience.

Big thanks to all of the parents, siblings and classmates that came out to cheer the girls on and to Mercedes Jones Photography for snagging these great photos.
