Students and families filled the halls of State High on Feb. 4 ready to build. Soon they were snapping together Legos, sculpting crafts and shaping stories.

More than 1,500 community members attended the 2026 SCASD Reads Family Night, the culmination of the district’s annual Reads celebration. This year’s theme, “Building Stories,” was meant to reach the builder in us all, said organizer Paije Davis.

“Everyone is a builder,” said Davis, the Corl Street Elementary librarian and district library department coordinator. “Whether it’s building stories as a writer or meals while cooking with our families, we all do it. So we wanted every single person who walked through the doors to feel connected to something or someone.”

Now in its third year at the high school, Family Reads Night is a celebration of reading and community. The event has grown over the years and now features more than 60 stations where students can take part in a variety of games, crafts, activities and read-alouds.

SCASD students, faculty, administrators and school board members, local businesses, community organizations and Penn State groups all volunteered their time.

“One word that comes to mind is, ‘community,’” Davis said. “It’s unbelievable to me the sense of community pride I felt when I stood in that high school. We live in a town that reads and encourages reading in our young children, K-12. While standing there, that was very apparent.”

On Jan. 22, the Chambersburg Trojans made the long, snowy journey to State College for a wrestling match with the Little Lions and lost, 45-22.

The Little Lions came out fired up after last year’s 34-31 loss to the Trojans.

“Anytime you go up against a Mid-Penn Conference opponent, you’re going to face some tough wrestlers,” State College Head Coach Jason Nickal said. “Last year, we went up to their place, and we lost a close one. It was kind of a heartbreaker, so we were kind of carrying that one in our hip pocket and wanted a little revenge tonight, and we got it.”

State High’s Camden Fletcher and Chambersburg’s Hunter Johnson kicked off the night at 107 pounds. Johnson methodically dominated the match and secured a big reversal at the beginning of the second period en route to a fall with 33 seconds left in the third.

State College was undeterred by the early loss and answered by ripping off five straight victories from 114 to 139 pounds. Noah Young and Luke Young began the run by each pinning their opponents in under a minute. Kael Davis and Jon Whitbred then picked up tech falls, winning 17-1 and 16-0, respectively.

Whitbred’s dominant performance came in his first match back from a hand injury.

“It was a little different to wrestle through it, but I managed to adjust in certain scenarios and come out on top,” Whitbred said.

Nickal was also pleased with his junior’s return to the mat.

“He was aggressive; he didn’t let the injury hold him back at all,” Nickal said. “He went out there and wrestled his match and controlled the tempo of the match. It was dominant from the beginning, so I was very happy to see Jon back on the mat; that was a big boost for us.”

In it to win it recognition for Andy Lloyd!

Elementary Health and Physical Education teacher Andy Lloyd comes to school every day fully committed to doing what is best for his students and colleagues. He brings energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to help everyone succeed. His positive presence and strong relationships with students make a lasting impact throughout the district and represent the In it to Win it attitude!

He is an integral part of both the Gray’s Woods and Ferguson Township school communities and the principals say he consistently goes above and beyond expectations. In both schools, Andy serves as the MC for all school assemblies, using humor and strong relationships with students to make each event fun, engaging, and meaningful while building a sense of school pride.

In addition to his engaging and creative classroom lessons, Andy has worked closely this year with the PBIS team to create fun, motivating grade-level rewards tied to STAR ticket goals. One standout example occurred when grade levels that met their goals were surprised with a blow-up snowman in their classroom—signaling an upcoming reward. Those classes earned the opportunity to participate in a snowball fight (using foam balls) in the gym. Going above and beyond yet again, Andy personally designed and set up the gym as an obstacle course and led each grade through the activity to ensure everyone had a memorable and rewarding experience.

Andy is an exceptional educator whose passion, creativity, and dedication positively impact students, colleagues, and the entire school community. Take if from the students who mobbed him while I presented his shirt, Andy is clearly In it to Win it with all of us!

Thank you, Andy, and I hope you wear your t-shirt with pride.

Sincerely,

Curtis Johnson
Superintendent of Schools

We are incredibly proud of our CTC programs!

Centre County Commissioners on Jan. 27 adopted a proclamation designating February 2026 as Career and Technical Education Month in Centre County.

The proclamation highlights the important roles in the workforce that are supported through career and technical education. CTE programs offer practical, hands-on learning to students, preparing them for in-demand careers. These programs help strengthen the local workforce, businesses, industries, and economy.

Centre County has a long-standing commitment to CTE, which the proclamation also highlights. Locally, there are three CTE institutions: Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, South Hills School of Business and Technology, and State College Area School District CTC. Together, ther local CTE programs showcase over 100 years of dedication to students and employers.

To discuss the prevalence and impact of CTE in Centre County, directors and students from SCASD-CTC, CPI, and South Hills joined the commissioners.

Dr. Ben Mordan, Director of SCASD-CTC, spoke of the 15 programs offered to students at State College Area High School. The program serves over 2,000 students in total, supporting certification and credentialing in many programs.

After years of planning, construction is almost ready to start on the State College Area School District’s newest middle school.

The district’s board approved the final plans for the new Park Forest Middle School at a recent meeting after roughly two years of discussion.

“This is a really exciting week for us in the State College Area School District,” Nabil Mark, communications manager for SCASD, said.

The new $130-$140 million facility will be located right next to Circleville Park in Patton Township. It will be about 270,000 square feet, nearly doubling the current school’s size at 150,000 square feet.

Recently, State High students in Advanced Physics and Chemistry Research classes attended a research conference at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. While there, the students competed in various events with huge success.

In the poster competition, the team of Will Liu and Dash Nealon took first place while Aaron Le and Spencer Stevenson-Peck finished third. Both groups presented their physics research projects. Additionally, the duo of Safa Ali and Aaron Le received first place in the Communication Challenge, where students were given 5 minutes to explain a recent peer-reviewed chemistry paper.

Led by teachers Sarah Bevilacqua and Bob White, these types of independent research opportunities not only allow students great agency in furthering their passion for STEM, but also provide valuable experience that strengthens their applications to highly selective and competitive colleges.

Congratulations to these students as well as Levi Nicholas, Sophia Ge, and Melinda Wu who also competed, on a very educational and award-winning trip!
