National CPR and AED Awareness Week

Effective CPR and early AED use save lives — and our region is committed to making every second count.

As we begin CPR & AED Awareness Week, Seven Mountains EMS Council is proud to highlight the resources, training, and data‑driven initiatives that strengthen cardiac arrest survival across our nine‑county region and Commonwealth.

📍 CPR/AED Training Centers in Our Region

If your organization, workplace, or community group needs CPR/AED training, our regional Training Centers are ready to help:

Bellefonte EMS — (814) 355‑2907

Centre LifeLink EMS (State College) — (814) 237‑8163

FAME Emergency Medical Services Inc. (Lewistown) — (717) 248‑5553

Moshannon Valley EMS (Philipsburg) — (814) 342‑3292

William Cameron Engine Company (Lewisburg) — (570) 524‑2291

Seven Mountains EMS Council Office — (814) 355‑1474

📊 CARES: Advancing Cardiac Arrest Outcomes in Pennsylvania

Our EMS Program Specialist, Patrick, serves as the state coordinator for the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) — a national tool used by EMS agencies and hospitals to strengthen QA/QI programs, identify trends, and improve cardiac arrest outcomes.

If your agency or hospital would like to participate in CARES and join the effort to advance survival in our region and throughout the Commonwealth, please reach out to Patrick at our office.

❤️ Why This Matters

Immediate CPR can double or triple survival from cardiac arrest.

Early AED use dramatically increases the chance of restoring a heartbeat.

Community training builds stronger, safer neighborhoods.

Together, we can improve survival — one trained responder, one AED, and one data‑driven improvement at a time.

In honor of EMS week, here is some history about the symbol commonly seen on EMS personnel, ambulances, and objects associated with emergency medicine.

** Star of Life history **

The Star of Life is a blue, six-barred star featuring the Rod of Asclepius (an ancient symbol of medicine), created in 1973 by Leo R. Schwartz for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to identify certified Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel and vehicles. It replaced the orange cross to avoid conflict with the American Red Cross and was officially patented on February 1, 1977.

Six branches of the star:

1. Detection: The first rescuers on the scene, usually untrained civilians or those involved in the incident, observe the scene, understand the problem, identify the dangers to themselves and others, and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety on the scene (environmental, electricity, chemicals, radiation, etc.).

2. Reporting: The call for professional help is made and dispatch is connected with the victims, providing emergency medical dispatch.

3. Response: The first rescuers provide first aid and immediate care to the extent of their capabilities.

4. On scene care: The EMS personnel arrive and provide immediate care to the extent of their capabilities on-scene.

5. Care in transit: The EMS personnel proceed to transfer the patient to a hospital via an ambulance or helicopter for specialized care. They provide medical care during the transportation.

6. Transfer to definitive care: Appropriate specialized care is provided at the hospital.
