šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø BP Vito Fossella returned to Tottenville High School to share some exciting updates for Pirate Nation!

The new gym floor is on track to be completed in just a few weeks, just in time for summer camp. We also unveiled the school’s brand-new electronic scoreboard and checked in on the future Drennan Field House, a project more than 30 years in the making.

On Staten Island, our kids come first.

šŸ°šŸŽØFor more than a century, this stained-glass window has been part of Curtis High School’s story.

When Curtis BSAC students presented Borough President Vito Fossella with the idea of restoring it, he was happy to help make it happen. Soon, this historic piece will become the centerpiece of Curtis’ new main entrance, welcoming students for generations to come.

šŸ“š Borough President Vito Fossella celebrated the milestone 30th anniversary of Readers Are Leaders by honoring our fourth-grade ā€œSuper Readersā€ last night in a ceremony at the Michal J. Petrides School.

Fourth graders in Staten Island’s public, private, and parochial schools participated in the 2026 Readers are Leaders Challenge, which challenged them to read at least five books in five weeks and produce a report on their favorite book.

Since its inception in 1996 by then-Councilman Fossella, more than 140,000 fourth-grade students have read more than 840,000 books.

One Super Reader was selected from each participating school for the honor.

ā€œStaten Island is thirsty for leaders, and the one common denominator among those who read is that they all read and they don’t stop,ā€ said Borough President Fossella. ā€œThey just keep on learning. This is the foundation you have going into fifth grade, middle school, high school, college and beyond. That’s one thing that hasn’t changed.ā€

Our thanks to Community Media of Staten Island and the Staten Island FerryHawks for sponsoring this year’s Challenge.

We hope the Challenge continues to inspire the thousands of students who have participated over the last 30 years to continue reading and builds a newfound love of books for future participants.
