Statesboro STEAM Academy Opens Its Permanent Home

A community that is attracting global industry has to answer one question above all others: can it grow the skilled workforce those employers will need? Statesboro answered part of that question with a building.

Statesboro STEAM Academy has opened a new campus at 531 E. Main Street, an approximately $7.5 million facility built specifically for the way its students learn. The state charter school, whose full name is the College, Careers, Arts, and Technology Academy, began the 2026-27 year with about 290 students and room to grow toward 400. Inside are flexible spaces designed for inquiry, real-world projects, engineering, technology, and student-led research.

Here is why that reaches beyond the classroom. Bulloch County is absorbing more than $900 million in new industrial investment and over 1,500 committed jobs. Every one of those jobs is, in the end, a bet on local and regional talent. A school purpose-built to let young people design, build, and present real work is part of our talent-pipeline infrastructure, as surely as any road, rail spur, or water line.

There is a difference, Principal Corliss Reese noted, between a place adapted to serve as a school and a place created for learning. The same holds for a community and its future: you can adapt to growth, or you can build for it. Congratulations to Reese, the students, the families, and everyone who believed in this school long before it had the space to match the vision. Economic development is not only about the companies that arrive, but also about the trained and skilled people who walk through their doors.

Savannah/Hilton Head Airport Funding

What does a taxiway in Savannah have to do with Bulloch County? More than you might think.

Global industry does not relocate in a vacuum. Long before a supplier breaks ground, the executives, engineers, and site selectors who decide where billions of dollars will land have to get here first. For our region, they arrive through one front door: Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, the closest commercial gateway to Bulloch County and to the Hyundai Metaplant supply chain taking shape around us.

That gateway is getting a little stronger. More than $4 million in new federal infrastructure funding will reconstruct a taxiway at the airport, the latest investment keeping Coastal Georgia's aviation front door open and ready for business.

Roads, rail, water, runways. Economic development is mostly the infrastructure no one notices, right up until it is the reason a company chooses to come to our area and provides accessible jobs right here in Bulloch County.

A grand opening is a big signal.

When a national brand chooses Statesboro for its first location in Southeast Georgia, and about 100 neighbors line up before dawn to be there, that's a growing market showing its confidence. Raising Cane's arrived with roughly 170 new jobs at $15 an hour, from a company that's already giving back: a $1,000 opening-day gift to Georgia Southern's Center for Wildlife Education, with a pledge to support local schools, teams, and nonprofits.

The restaurants, retail, and amenities that make people want to stay are economic development, too. Welcome to Bulloch County, Raising Cane's. 🍗

Grateful for Bulloch County!

August 28th was National Thoughtful Day, and the most thoughtful thing we can think of is to say “thank you" to the place we call home.

Bulloch County is a great place to live, work, and play and that does not happen by luck. It is built, on purpose, by people who care. People like our legacy business and manufacturing partners that have invested here for generations and new industry partners that are enhancing the fabric of this community. It is the educators from our local P-12 schools, Ogeechee Technical College, and Georgia Southern University who prepare our current and next generation workforce. It is the entrepreneurs willing to bring forth something new and exciting into the world and it is our neighbors who show up for each other time and time again.

At the Development Authority of Bulloch County, it is our privilege to work alongside these partners every day. A collaborative community is a thoughtful community; one that plans and works for the betterment of the entire group. We are taking this moment to be thankful for Bulloch County and to pledge our continued commitment to thoughtful and meaningful progress for our entire community.

OTC & STC Private Pilot Ground School Cohort

Do You Want to Learn to Fly? Savannah Technical College (Savannah Tech) and Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) are partnering with Savannah Aviation to launch the second Private Pilot Ground School cohort to provide aspiring aviators with an affordable, accessible first step toward earning their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) private pilot certificate. The program welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. Previous participants have ranged from teenagers exploring aviation careers to retirees pursuing a lifelong interest in flying.

Classes begin Monday, Sept. 21 at OTC and Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Savannah Tech and will prepare students for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test through a comprehensive six-week curriculum led by experienced flight instructors. The course combines in-person classroom instruction with interactive online learning, equipping students with the knowledge needed to earn an endorsement to take the FAA written examination.

The goal of this joint initiative is to ensure high-demand aviation training is highly accessible to aspiring pilots across Southeast Georgia. By actively removing geographic barriers, the colleges are giving students throughout Bulloch and surrounding counties the ability to choose the campus location that best fits their life.

The cost of the Private Pilot Ground School is $1,000. To ensure regional accessibility, the six-week course is offered at two separate campus locations. Both cohorts meet two evenings a week to accommodate working professionals. For more information, visit the OTC News section of the Ogeechee Technical College website home page.

East Georgia Regional Medical Center Expansion

East Georgia Regional Medical Center (EGRMC) is expanding its investment in itself and the community surrounding it. Increasing the quality of life for local and regional residents is an economic development asset that brings tangible and intangible benefits. This latest $11 million investment includes expansion and modernization of its cardiac catheterization labs, adds eight new prep-and-recovery bays, upgrades procedure rooms, and adds next-generation imaging. This expansion is part of more than $17.5 million EGRMC has invested in our region's care in recent months.

Advanced medical care close to home is essential to our economic infrastructure. Current and potential industries want to ensure this important resource is available for our workforce. Hospitals expand because the community is growing and vice versa.

Thank you, East Georgia Regional Medical Center, for your continued support of Statesboro-Bulloch County and the surrounding region.

Georgia Southern Visits South Korea

Dr. Deedee Southerlin, Director of Georgia Southern's Division of Continuing and Professional Education, and Kendria Lee, Associate Vice President for External Affairs, joined an immersive program in South Korea sponsored by AJIN Georgia and hosted by Korea Corner at Auburn University.

Korean suppliers to Hyundai's Metaplant have committed more than $500 million and over 1,200 jobs right here in Bulloch County. Roughly one in six of the Metaplant's workers are from Bulloch. Last year alone, local Hyundai suppliers paid more than $2.46 million to our schools and county services through PILOT funds (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes).

Global industry does not relocate in a vacuum. It brings people. Communities that prepare their schools and institutions to welcome those families, deliberately, and in advance, are the ones where international investment succeeds and stays.
We are proud that Georgia Southern supports this regional growth and the students and families living and working in our region.
