This morning, the Statesboro City Council voted to officially name the previously unnamed street behind City Hall — running from East Vine Street to East Cherry Street — "Nicolas Anciaux Lane," honoring Lt. Col. Nicolas Anciaux, a French officer who fought alongside American forces at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781.

Anciaux settled in Bulloch County in 1807 after being granted 1,200 acres of land, and is credited with naming the Arcola community. He died in 1810, and his legacy is preserved on two historical markers in the county, including one at Union Meeting House and another in the Mill Creek area.

The street naming petition was submitted by Georgia Southern University professor Dr. Olga Amarie on July 4, 2026 — fittingly, the nation's 250th Independence Day. Dr. Amarie and descendants of Anciaux were present during this morning's meeting to share more about his story and the petition.

The City of Statesboro has tentatively adopted a millage rate that will require an increase in property taxes by 33.98 percent.

All citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase, which will be held at City Hall Council Chambers, 50 East Main Street, on September 8, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and September 15, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 9.600 mills, an increase of 2.435 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 7.165 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $255,000 is approximately $243.50 and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $375,000 is approximately $365.25.

The City of Statesboro joins the nation in mourning the loss of the legendary Dolly Parton.

“Beyond her music, Dolly’s unmatched generosity, open heart, and commitment to lifting others up made her a true American treasure,” says Mayor McCollar. “She taught us all how to be a little kinder and more welcoming to everyone we meet.”

In compliance with the Presidential flag order, flags at all city buildings will be lowered to half-staff through Tuesday, September 1st, in her honor.

The appointment is for a three-year term, and the deadline to apply to be considered is August 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Completed applications should be submitted to the office of the City Clerk by email to [email protected] or in person at City Hall, 50 East Main Street, Statesboro.
