The Statesville Fire Department (SFD) is proud to announce the promotion of Matthew Baity to the rank of Battalion Chief.

Baity has served with SFD for more than 26 years, beginning his career as a firefighter on January 10, 2000. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2011, Senior Lieutenant in 2021, Captain later that year and Senior Captain in 2026. His promotion to Battalion Chief marks the latest step in a career of continued service and leadership within the department.

โ€œChief Baity has demonstrated strong leadership, professionalism and a commitment to serving both this department and our community throughout his career,โ€ said Statesville Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees. โ€œHe brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to this position, and I am confident he will serve our department well as Battalion Chief.โ€

Baity earned the promotion through SFDโ€™s competitive promotional process, which evaluates candidates based on qualifications, assessments, experience, job performance and leadership abilities.

As Battalion Chief, Baity will take on an expanded leadership role within SFD, helping oversee personnel, emergency operations and the day-to-day activities of his assigned shift.

The Statesville Fire Department congratulates Battalion Chief Matthew Baity on his promotion and thanks him for his more than 26 years of dedicated service to the department and the Statesville community.

Dead batteries can start real fires, and the Statesville Fire Department is asking the community to help prevent them through its new โ€œ๐…๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ƒ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆโ€ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‘๐ž๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ž.

Rechargeable batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, can pose a serious fire hazard when placed in household trash. Even batteries that appear to be dead can retain enough energy to spark or ignite if they are crushed, punctured or damaged. These fires can occur in homes, garbage trucks and waste facilities.

The Statesville Fire Department (SFD) is challenging residents to help reduce that risk by properly recycling unwanted rechargeable batteries and helping fill the departmentโ€™s Call2Recycle collection drum.

โ€œEvery battery recycled is one less battery that could start a fire in a garbage truck, recycling facility or home,โ€ said Statesville Fire Marshal Allen โ€œPeteโ€ Morrison. โ€œThis is an easy way for everyone to help protect our firefighters, sanitation workers and our community.โ€

As part of the campaign, the SFD will host a special ๐๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐“๐š๐ค๐ž ๐๐š๐œ๐ค ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ on Monday, October 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fire Station 1. Residents can bring their unwanted rechargeable batteries for proper recycling and help the department reach its goal of filling the collection drum.

The challenge may have a special event, but safe battery disposal doesnโ€™t end there. Rechargeable battery collection is available year-round at Statesville Fire Department Station 1, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Fill the Drum campaign is part of the Statesville Fire Departmentโ€™s ongoing community risk reduction efforts to educate residents about lithium-ion battery safety, proper disposal and the fire hazards associated with rechargeable batteries.

The message is simple: If it charges, donโ€™t trash it. Recycle it.

Crews completed 11,545 training hours and reached 834 people through fire & life safety programs.

๐Ÿง— Training for the calls that don't happen every day.

Statesville Fire Department personnel recently joined Mooresville Fire-Rescue for quarterly joint rescue training focused on cell tower rescue scenarios.

Cell tower rescues are considered low-frequency, high-risk incidents that require specialized technical rope rescue skills. Training like this gives firefighters an opportunity to practice those skills and work alongside neighboring rescue teams before they're needed during a real emergency.

This quarter's training was hosted in Mooresville and is part of the departments' ongoing quarterly joint rescue training. ๐Ÿš’
