Iredell County Board of Elections The Board of Elections is responsible for supervising voter registration and conducting all elections Each County in North Carolina has a Board of Elections.

It is a five person board which is appointed every two years by the State Board of Elections. North Carolina General Statute §163-30 states “The State chairman of each political party shall have the right to recommend to the State Board of Elections five registered voters in each county for appointment to the board of elections for that county. If such recommendations are received by the Board 15

or more days before the last Tuesday in June 1985, and each two years thereafter, it shall be the duty of the State Board of Elections to appoint the county boards from the names thus recommended.” The local political parties submit three names to the State political party chairman. Once appointed, county board members take an oath of office and begin their two year terms Tuesday following the third Monday in July in odd-numbered years. The Board oversees the functions of the office and hires a Director to administer all duties.

North Carolina State Board of Elections Executive Director Sam Hayes issued the following statement after House Bill 834 became law this week.

“I would like to thank the General Assembly for passing House Bill 834, which will strengthen and improve election administration in North Carolina. The changes in this legislation will give elections officials additional time and flexibility to process ballots, address voter issues, and carry out their responsibilities. We appreciate the General Assembly’s continued support of the State Board and look forward to implementing these changes to better serve voters and county boards of elections across North Carolina.”
