With broken hearts, our thoughts and prayers are with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, their families, friends and community as they are forced to deal with the loss of one of their deputies and the injury of another while conducting a welfare check.

** From the Sheriff's desk **

Since the beginning of April through the end of May the office has been inundated with transports from outside the local area totaling a combined 4,507.2 miles traveled by staff. That breaks down to approximately 104 miles per work day that deputies have been on the road. Staff have volunteered to adjust their work schedules to accommodate these transports, either starting their day before sunrise and/or staying late to ensure completion of their regular duties working the courts and serving process. I would like to acknowledge and say thank you to the following staff members:

Deputy Swink
Deputy Hatter
Deputy Kyle
Deputy Dillard
Deputy Woolford
Deputy Curry
Deputy Chandler
Deputy Trott

Your dedication and commitment does not go unnoticed and it is greatly appreciated by command staff and the courts!

Here are some tips from the Staunton Sheriff’s Office to be Spring Storm Ready:

1) Have a plan before storms hit: Know where your safe place is and make sure your family can get there quickly if a warning is issued. A basement or interior room with no windows are the safest place from potential debris. Seconds matter in fast moving storms.

2) Take warnings seriously: If alerts are issued by agencies like the National Weather Service, act immediately, don’t wait to see the storm. Law enforcement often sees injuries that could have been prevented with earlier action.

3) Protect yourself from hail: If you’re driving and encounter large hail, safely pullover, stay in your vehicle, and cover your head. Avoid stopping under bridges, as they can create dangerous traffic hazards.

4) Stay off the roads during severe weather: Emergency responders need clear access to assist those in danger. Driving during tornado warnings or severe storms put you and others at unnecessary risk.

5) Avoid downed power lines and damaged areas: After a storm passes, treat all down power lines as live and report them immediately. Stay clear of debris and dangerous structures until authorities confirm the area is safe.

These simple steps help, law-enforcement and emergency responders keep our community safer during dangerous weather events.

The Staunton Sheriffs Office wants you to KEEP YOUR EYES AHEAD, THINK SAFELY INSTEAD. Here are some ideas to curb distracted driving.

• Use hands-free if you must make a call, but keep the conversations brief.
• Do not eat, apply makeup, or reach for items while your vehicle is in motion.
• Keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, and avoid the urge to multitask while driving.
• Do not assume short trips are safer, as most accidents happen closer to home.

Here are a few safety tips to always keep in mind when getting behind the wheel:

• Set navigation and playlists before starting a trip and pull over safely if you must make a call or send a text.

*** A message from the Sheriff***

It has come to our attention that members of our community are receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to be a deputy with the Staunton Sheriff’s Office advising that you have missed your federal court date and demanding payment over the phone. The Staunton Sheriff’s Office nor any other law-enforcement agency will request payment over the phone for fines or fees. THIS IS A SCAM!! Do not give them your credit card information or payment of any other type over the phone.

Should you receive one of these calls report it to your local law-enforcement agency, the Staunton Police Department @ 540-332-3842 or you may also file a complaint through the Internet Crime Complaint Center www.IC3.gov website.
