As we close out Get Caught Reading Month, we highlight Bessie Weller librarian Courtney Janovsky’s best recommendations!
Her library is a place for every student to find a home, from the hand-cut art mural of 3,000 dots on the walls to blending literacy education with the beloved school garden just outside the library windows.
"Our school library is a place for everyone,” she said. “There is something within these walls for every student and staff member, even if they don't know what they're looking for yet."
Mrs. Janovsky’s job is student-driven in every sense: the books she highlights, the lessons she designs, and the conversations she starts are all shaped by what students are curious about, excited by and working through.
Her summer reading recommendations? Adaptations. Classics reimagined as graphic novels, nonfiction tied to favorite movies and TV shows, and chapter books retold in picture book format, such as:
📖 The Hobbit: A Graphic Novel
📖 Bluey and Bingo's Fancy Restaurant Cookbook: Yummy Recipes, for Real Life
📖 The Wild Robot on the Island: An Illustrated Picture Book
Happy reading!
