A meaningful day for housing in Staunton.

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine sat down with City of Staunton, VA – Government leaders and our team at the Staunton Redevelopment & Housing Authority to talk about the road ahead for affordable housing in our community — and to celebrate real progress.

Thanks to the leadership of Senator Kaine and Senator Mark Warner, Staunton secured $500,000 in federal Congressionally Directed Spending to help transform the former Dunsmore Business College on West Beverley Street into 15 affordable homes for seniors. Senator Kaine called it "a particularly good project" — and we couldn't agree more. This is historic adaptive reuse at its best: preserving a piece of Staunton's story while creating dignified, quality housing for our neighbors who need it most.

And we're not stopping there. We've submitted a new $1 million application to convert the former Covenant Community Church into 10 more units — five of them set aside for the veterans who served us all.

Senator Kaine was candid about the challenges ahead at the federal level, but he also pointed to real reason for hope: the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which stands to expand housing supply and strengthen the low-income housing tax credit that makes projects like ours possible.

Housing has moved from a top-ten concern to a top-three issue in communities everywhere. Here in Staunton, we're meeting that moment with partnership, persistence, and a belief that every person deserves a safe place to call home.

Grateful to Senator Kaine for coming to the Valley, to Mayor Michele Edwards, to City Council Member Alice Woods — Council's liaison to the SRHA — and to all of City leadership, and to every partner walking this road with us. 💙

A new chapter for an old landmark in downtown Staunton. 🏛️

We're thrilled to share that the Dunsmore Building Senior Apartments has been awarded Low-Income Housing Tax Credits from Virginia Housing — the milestone that brings affordable senior housing in the heart of our city within reach.

The project will transform the historic building at 912 W. Beverley Street into 15 homes for older residents living on fixed incomes — preserving a piece of Staunton's history while giving our seniors a place to age in their community, close to the downtown they know and love.

A milestone like this is never the work of one organization. We're deeply grateful to Virginia Housing and its Board of Commissioners for their investment and confidence in this project, and to VCDC Virginia Community Development Corporation, whose guidance helped steer us through every step of getting here. We're also thankful to the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge and Augusta Health, whose early support helped make this possible from the very beginning.

To our partners and to this community — thank you. We can't wait to see what comes next.
