Public Safety Announcement: Open Burning Advisory

Due to ongoing drought, high temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation, our area is at an increased risk for wildfires.

Please avoid ALL open burning at this time, including debris, brush, and leaves. Even small fires can quickly become dangerous under current conditions.

Help keep our community safe:
• Do not burn outdoors until conditions improve
• Properly dispose of smoking materials
• Avoid activities that create sparks (welding, equipment use in dry grass)
• Report any smoke or fire immediately

While this is not currently a burn ban, conditions are being closely monitored.

Your cooperation is critical in preventing wildfires and protecting lives, property, and natural resources.

The National Weather Service is highlighting increased fire danger across our area due to:

💨 Gusty winds
🍂 Dry vegetation
💧 Low relative humidity

⚠️ WHAT THIS MEANS:
Any fire that starts can spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

🚫 AVOID ALL OUTDOOR BURNING
This includes:
• Brush fires
• Campfires & fire pits
• Burning debris

🔥 COMMON CAUSES OF FIRES:
• Discarded ci******es
• Equipment sparks (trailers, chains, machinery)
• Parking on dry grass

✅ PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY:
• Secure trailer chains (prevent roadside sparks)
• Keep water or extinguishers nearby if working outdoors
• Call immediately if you see smoke or fire

🚨🔥 ELEVATED FIRE DANGER TODAY – PLEASE USE CAUTION 🔥🚨

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a notice for elevated fire danger across Virginia today due to:
• Low humidity
• Gusty winds
• Dry ground conditions

⚖️ Reminder: Virginia Burn Law is in effect
➡️ No open burning before 4:00 PM (February 15 – April 30)

These conditions make it easy for fires to start and spread rapidly—even from something small like a cigarette, burn pile, or equipment spark.

🚫 Avoid outdoor burning today if possible
🚬 Properly dispose of smoking materials
🔥 Use extreme caution with grills, fire pits, and machinery

While this is not a full Red Flag Warning, the risk is still very real.

🚨 We are grateful to share that every member of our Station 5 A-Shift team who was injured in a recent fire has made a recovery and they are back to full duty!

🔥This job is built on more than just response, it’s built on family. Through every challenge, this crew and our team across the city showed what it means to look out for one another. We couldn’t be more proud to see them healthy, strong, and ready to serve our community.

Here’s a few pictures from a field fire yesterday. A big thank you to Middlebrook Fire (Company 3) and Stuarts Draft Fire (Company 7) for their assistance. We were able to knock the fire down quickly and stopped it from spreading to adjoining properties.

For the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 30 degrees below expected. * WHERE...In Maryland, Eastern Garrett, Extreme Western Allegany, and Western Garrett Counties. In Virginia, Central Virginia Blue Ridge and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, and Western Highland County.
