The Staunton Police Department is an internationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Staunton, Virginia. The Department consists of fifty-three sworn officers and seventeen full-time civilian employees. In addition to providing twenty-four hour patrol coverage and criminal investigative functi

ons, the Department is very active in community policing. This social media page is not a public forum. It is a designated, limited public forum maintained by the City of Staunton. The Staunton Police Department would like to thank everyone who brought snacks, wrote thank-you cards, and generously provided meals for our officers during the 2026 National Police Week. Thank you to the Staunton Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association, Staunton Police Foundation, our dispatchers, Blue Ridge Court Services, Holy Smokes BBQ of Virginia, Chick-fil-A, Big Sky Apartments, New Directions Center, Inc., Columbia Gas, MISSION BBQ, St. Francis Church, Ciro’s Pizza in Verona, and Papa Johns Pizza. We would also like to thank the American Shakespeare Center for allowing our staff to attend their rendition of The Hound of Baskervilles.

NEWS RELEASE

Marcus D Lane Jr, 42, of Staunton, was arrested as part of a joint investigation involving the Staunton Police Department and the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The Staunton Police Department received a referral through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in April 2026. Lane was charged with twenty-one counts of knowingly possessing and distributing child po*******hy. Lane was arrested on May 5, 2026, by the Staunton Police Department. The investigation is ongoing. Lane is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.

The Staunton Police Department is a member agency of the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

We enjoyed having students from the criminal justice program at Valley Career and Technical Center visit the police department yesterday. The students asked insightful questions and showed great enthusiasm for various career paths in the criminal justice system.

NEWS RELEASE

On May 6, 2026, Stephen D Thompson, 20, of Staunton, was arrested by the Staunton Police Department for six counts of knowingly possessing and distributing child po*******hy. On May 12, 2026, Thompson was charged with ten additional counts of knowingly possessing and distributing child po*******hy. The investigation is ongoing.

Thompson is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
