This past Monday through Thursday, fire and rescue departments from the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg, along with Rockingham and Augusta County, hosted Rescue Challenge 2026.

Rescue Challenge is a four-day event where technical rescue teams from Virginia and across the East Coast come together to tackle a variety of specialized rescue scenarios, including rope rescue, confined-space rescue, trench rescue, building-collapse rescue, farm-machinery rescue, and water rescue.

Each team participated in two events a day. While not a competition, with no scores kept, these events allow teams to hone their skills in real-life, challenging scenarios in a hard-to-duplicate training environment.

We would like to give special thanks to two city businesses, Rocky Dale Quarry and Qualtek, for assisting us with training sites for this event.
