Prepping your pool for the summer? β˜€οΈπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ Before you drain, make sure to check out our updated guidelines!

Staunton's storm drains connect directly to our local streams. Discharging large volumes of chemically treated water into these drains can have devastating impacts on fish and other local aquatic life. To protect our environment and to be mindful of neighboring properties, residents draining pools within the city are asked to follow the guidelines here: https://www.ci.staunton.va.us/home/showpublisheddocument/13816/639148848525900000

The Lewis Creek Watershed Advisory Committee organized Staunton's Clean the Bay Day this past Saturday on May 2nd. 140 volunteers from multiple organizations cleaned up about 1,400 lbs. of trash (73 bags) from approximately 15 miles of our local streets and streams! 10,000 cigarette butts were collected!!

A HUGE thank you to all the organizations and volunteers that helped out this past month. This clean-up improves not only the Chesapeake Bay, but our local waterways. And our local wildlifeβ€”including the red salamanderβ€”has a cleaner, safer place to call home. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

With Clean the Bay Day around the corner, Environmental Programs staff picked up trash in the Gypsy Hill Park Stream Restoration area this morning. Common trash items collected were food wrappers, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and cigarette butts. A unique item found was a party noise maker. Staff also got some photos of the local wildlife along the way! πŸ’πŸπŸ¦†
