As many of our colleagues and friends know, Roy Smith was a friend to all of the Clay County STAR Ambulance crews. In fact, he treated many of them like his own kids and family.

Tragically on April 5, 2025 Roy was killed while responding to a call for help.

As a way to remember Roy’s life and legacy, all three Clay County Ambulances have been outfitted with Roy’s name.

It’s a way of remembering a life that was cut way too short and a reminder to all, old and new what he did for us and this county.

Gone but never forgotten.
May he rest in peace.”

Today at 4:15pm marks the one year anniversary that our department nearly lost another member. Thankfully by the grace of God and the quick actions of some of our local first responders, EMT/Firefighter Roxie Wilson is still with us today. With Roxie’s permission, we would like to share Roxie’s gratitude. Her comments are below:

“May 21st, 2025 was like any other normal day.
I got the kids ready for school and I went to work at the daycare that day.
Then at 16:15, tones drop for a 10-50 PI around State Road 59 and Whiterock Road. That's when our lives changed forever.
Brazil fire dept and Brazil police dept had a very quick response time.
They got me out of the car and started CPR. Due to adequate CPR and the use of an AED, they got my heart going again.
Word started to spread fast that it was me and people, friends, family and even strangers where coming from everywhere.
The amazing STAR ambulance crew got me loaded up and continued life saving care all the way to Indy.
After a very long, about 14 hours, for my friends and family, by the miracle of God and my guardian angels, I woke up, and 108 hours after my accident, I was walking out of Eskenazi hospital.
I'm so very thankful for everyone who took care of me, showed up to take care of my kids and husband when I couldn't.
The ones who never left my side.
My husband who never left my side and was my rock when I got home.
Some days are hard and PTSD sucks for all of us in our own way.
I may have missed my daughter graduate high school that week but I'm here now and i get to continue watching all my kids grow and thrive. I'm not tagging anyone in this because there is a lot of people and I dont want to forget anyone.
Just know you know who you are and I'm 100% thankful for everyone because I'm here and alive.
To the person who hit me because you neglected a stop sign, I hope you step on Legos everyday!

Paramedics Justin and Brandon of STAR Ambulance Service in Clay County responded to a critical crash involving an unresponsive patient and quickly stabilized the patient for transport.

When weather grounded air medical transport, they continued care during the ground transfer to Indianapolis alongside the flight crew. Their skill, teamwork and dedication directly contributed to saving a life.

Here is a little history lesson as we celebrate EMS week!!!

One of the nation's earliest hospital ambulance services — Indianapolis City Hospital (later Wishard, now Eskenazi Health) was among the first hospitals in the country to transport sick and injured patients, beginning in 1887, and became the first hospital to use two-way radios to coordinate ambulance dispatch in 1943.
