Program details:

Join Charlottesville NOW at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 24 at Northside Library to watch a film, hear from panelists, and eat bagels! The 2024 Oscar nominated short film, The ABCs of Book Banning, examines the country-wide trend of school districts banning books. It explores the human toll future generations will pay for depriving children of the right to read and learn about our complex world. After the film, panelists Leah Puryear, former member of Charlottesville School Board, and Circe Strauss of PFLAG of Greater Charlottesville will discuss the impact on individuals of not seeing books that reflect and speak to them. Free admission and bagel spread. RSVP requested on Eventbrite:

Join us for a screening of The ABCs of Book Banning followed by a stimulating panel discussion about the effects of book censorship.

…People need to be aware, it isn’t just rhetoric anymore. It's a slow process, but Virginia Dems are moving it forward.

The constitutional amendment proposed by Democrats shortly after their wins in the Nov. 7 elections states that everyone has a “fundamental right to reproductive freedom” that can’t be infringed upon by the state.

The amendment needs to pass the General Assembly twice: once before the 2025 elections, and once after. Voters would then see the amendment on their ballots in November 2026 (when also casting votes for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Mark Warner). The amendment doesn’t require signoff from Youngkin or any future governor.

Both sides of the debate say it allows them time to further educate voters.
