Description:
This is a full-time, exempt position as a Staff Engineer with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD). This position performs a variety of professional functions that support all district services. This position includes contact with consulting engineers, contractors, the public and other parties involved in the support and use of the products, reports, and technologies developed by MHFD.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Reviews development referrals from local communities within the District including zoning requests, preliminary and final drainage reports
• Provides technical review of supporting documentation (hydraulic analysis, reports, plans, profiles, and other products) for Flood Hazard Area Delineation studies
• Reviews and approves proposed plans for construction to ensure compliance with MHFD criteria and for feasibility of construction
• Provides technical review of hydrologic models, reports, figures, and other documents for watershed planning studies and flood risk mapping efforts
• Assists in special projects and educational outreach efforts that support MHFD’s mission, vision, and core values
• Supports internal and external research efforts to advance hydrologic assesments, stormwater quality practices, technical standards, and permit compliance
• Develops, maintains, and improves software tools, databases, details and specifications, and other technical products to support various MHFD services and activities
• Prepares pay estimates and invoices for MHFD construction and maintenance projects
• Assists Project Managers in the administration of construction contracts, including the bidding and
award process
• Assists Floodplain Manager in the administration of Letters of Map Change
• Assists with operation and maintenance of the early flood detection network and related systems.
• Assists with implementation of UDFCD’s flood emergency plan, flood documentation activities, and
flood warning services
• Provide leadership and mentorship of student interns, including training, assigning tasks, monitoring
progress and quality of deliverables, and conducting annual performance reviews
• Assists with outreach efforts to local governments and the floodplain community to promote the responsible use of District criteria and software

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or another relevant branch of engineering
• Three (3) years’ experience in responsible engineering work with a consulting engineering firm,
construction firm, or public agency, preferably with experience in construction management

Key Competencies:
• Knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, drainage and floodplain management concepts
• Working knowledge of the technical and practical aspects of engineering design and construction
• Ability to apply such knowledge and concepts to specific problems
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated interest and ability in maintaining technical proficiency

This is a full-time, exempt position as a Project Engineer with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD). This position provides a variety of professional functions associated with master planning, floodplain mapping, design and construction and stream management. The Project Engineer position plays a critical role in working with the watershed management team to support local government partners and complete successful watershed and stream projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Plans, coordinates, and manages capital improvement projects, including the management of project consultant and contractors
• Conducts watershed master planning studies including the procurement and management of mapping and engineering services
• Oversees the development and technical review of supporting documentation for Flood Hazard Area Delineation studies
• Reviews private land development referrals for compliance with the MHFD Maintenance Eligibility Program
• Oversees stream maintenance activities
• Administers consultant and construction contracts, including the bidding and award process
• Actively participates in special projects

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant branches of engineering
• Colorado-licensed Professional Engineer
• Five (5) years’ experience of which at least three must be in responsible charge in the field of
stormwater management and/or floodplain management. A master’s degree may be substituted for one year of experience
• Four or more years’ experience in responsible engineering work with civil engineering consulting
firm, construction firm, and/or a public agency
• Experience shall include engineering design, hydrology and hydraulics, construction management
and/or related activities

Key Competencies:
• Extensive knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, drainage, and floodplain management concepts
• Working knowledge of the technical and practical aspects of engineering design, project supervision,
construction, and maintenance
• Demonstrated ability to apply such knowledge and concepts to specific problems
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other members of the staff, other governmental
agencies, consulting engineers, and the public
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Must have a demonstrated interest and ability in maintaining technical proficiency

MHFD’s Engineer Internship Program offers a pre-professional job experience for qualified engineering students. Our internship program provides students with an opportunity to conduct meaningful work under the guidance and mentorship of professional engineers and/or construction managers. Students that participate in our internship program gain experience valuable to their personal and professional growth while fostering relationships with potential employers.

To be eligible for our internship program, the individual must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate college/university, majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or related studies.
