Congratulations to the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (PA VOAD) for achieving the State & Territory VOAD of the year. To receive this award, the organizations must demonstrate organizational excellence and contributions which reflect "best of the best" in service and support within the entire national VOAD effort.

Local volunteers from organizations like the Susquehanna Conference Disaster Response and the American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania help make this achievement possible.

UPDATE 4/15/2022:

The following information was supplied to us by the American Red Cross and is republished here with their permission:

"Ongoing needs for families impacted by Swatara Township Fire:

The American Red Cross is thankful that generous people want to help the families who lost their homes and belongings in the recent apartment fire on Garden Drive in Swatara Township.

The Red Cross has been providing shelter, meals, clothing, shoes and other items to affected residents through community partnerships. The biggest need for these families right now is finding housing, specifically rental properties that are move-in ready.

Once they transition out of the Red Cross shelter and into long-term housing, the Red Cross and Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg hope to provide the public with more information on the household products they will need. However, the Red Cross cannot take in these items at the shelter due to a lack of storage space.

You can help people affected by disasters like home fires, floods and countless other crises by making a gift to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Visit redcross.org, call 800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross."

Officials from Swatara Township and Dauphin County met with the Red Cross today to coordinate the relief efforts for those families displaced by the fire that occurred on April 10th on Garden Drive in Swatara Township. Please stay tuned to this site, as information will be forthcoming in the near future.

#DYK April is Low-Head Dams Public Safety Awareness Month

What is a Low-Head Dam?
A manufactured structure built in a river or stream channel, extending fully across from bank to bank.

Why are they dangerous?
Water falling over the dam creates highly aerated circulating currents which trap people & objects against the dam.

How can you stay safe?
1️⃣ Study maps before going out on the water to learn where the hazards are
2️⃣ Always navigate around the structure or turn around well before reaching the dam
