On April 3, 1939, a petition was presented to the Town Board asking that a Fire District be formed in the
Town of Stephentown. On April 19, 1939, a special meeting of the Town Board was called at 9:30 A.M. and a date of May 4, 1939,
was set to have a public hearing on the petition. The Board formed the Fire District and appointed the board of Fire Commissioners as follows:

THE FIREMAN'S PRAYER

When I am called to duty, God

Wherever flames may rage,

Give me strength to save some life

Whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child

Before it is too late

Or save an older person from

The horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert to the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently

To put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and

To give the best in me. To guard my every neighbor and

Protect his property. And if according to my fate

I am to lose my life

Please bless with your protecting hand

My family and my wife.

This afternoon, the SVFD responded to an accident with a cargo van into a tree. Car 1 arrived on scene to find heavy front end damage with both the driver and passenger requiring extrication. Car 1 and Car 5 were able to get the passenger out first with assistance from that patient. The driver was extricated via the jaws of life equipment and transported to AMC via Albany Life Net helicopter. We would like to give a huge shout out to not only our members, but those who also answered the call for assistance- Hancock, MA Volunteer Fire Department, Lebanon Valley Protective Association, County Ambulance, Albany Life Net, Rensselaer County - Public Safety, our Rensselaer County 911 dispatchers, NYSP, Sandlake, FatBody towing and to Gardners Coffee Shop for the helicopter to land on their driving range. You guys all rock.

Thanks again!!

We had a great time joining the Stephentown Memorial Library for a special Firefighter Story Time! 🚒

Along with sharing stories and having fun on the trucks, one of our firefighters dressed in full turnout gear—including a helmet, mask, and air tank—so the children could see and hear what a firefighter might look and sound like during an emergency.

All that equipment can seem scary, especially to a young child. Our goal was to help them understand that the person behind the mask is a firefighter who is there to help. We reminded the children that, in a fire, they should never hide from a firefighter.

We loved spending time with the kids and families. Being part of this community means more than responding to emergencies—it also means building connections, sharing important safety lessons, and having a little fun together!
