The Selden Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1984 to fill a gap in fire response in southern Erath County, Texas. Prior to our founding any fire response had to come from the City of Stephenville, nearly 10 miles away. Many grass fires were simply not responded to at all, or were put out by local farmers and residents. Following a house fire that destroyed a family home in 1983 a group of residents got together and in 1984 formed the Selden Volunteer Fire Department. The first fire station was a garage behind the Selden Community Center and our only equipment was second hand. Over the years the department has grown to 15 regular members and we have been able to build a larger, 4-bay fire station. Our equipment consists of 1 Structure Fire/Rescue Engine, 2 small brush truck and larger brush engine. We are sustained financially by the generous donations of the surrounding community and the ability to leverage equipment grants. Additionally we receive a small stipend from the county to assist with fuel costs. The Selden Volunteer Fire Department is your local fire department. All of our members live locally, so each and every time we go on a call it is truly neighbors helping neighbors!
