Our Vision: We will maintain aggressive, offensive fire fighting tactics. Support a safe and healthy workplace that is open to new innovations. Provide emergency response services and environmental protection. Establish a strong community relations prog

ram, particularly in the area of the fire, and prevention, public education, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness. Our Values: Putting People First with Pride, Honor, and Integrity. Our History
The Selden Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1984 to fill a gap in fire response in southern Erath County, Texas. Prior to our founding any fire response had to come from the City of Stephenville, nearly 10 miles away. Many grass fires were simply not responded to at all, or were put out by local farmers and residents. Following a house fire that destroyed a family home in 1983 a group of residents got together and in 1984 formed the Selden Volunteer Fire Department. The first fire station was a garage behind the Selden Community Center and our only equipment was second hand. Over the years the department has grown to 15 regular members and we have been able to build a larger, 4-bay fire station. Our equipment consists of 1 Structure Fire/Rescue Engine, 2 small brush truck and larger brush engine. We are sustained financially by the generous donations of the surrounding community and the ability to leverage equipment grants. Additionally we receive a small stipend from the county to assist with fuel costs. The Selden Volunteer Fire Department is your local fire department. All of our members live locally, so each and every time we go on a call it is truly neighbors helping neighbors!

This afternoon got a little wild. Selden VFD and Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue were dispatched to a vehicle fire on Hwy 6. Upon arrival firefighters faced 2 challenges- the vehicle itself that was on fire and the fact that it had begun to spread into the surrounding vegetation. Selden firefighters attacked the vegetation fire while Erath County firefighters took on the vehicle fire, saving the attached trailer. Both were quickly extinguished without the loss of any additional property and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Early this evening the Selden VFD and Hico Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of power lines down with fire on CR 200 near Hwy 67N. Upon arrival units found that large tree branches had broken off in high winds and struck nearby power lines, creating a shower of sparks that ignited a grass field nearby. Fortunately the fire was extinguished by a rain shower. Quite the series of events on this call. Many things could have gone wrong on this call that could have resulted in a larger incident. Selden FD remained on scene to assist with traffic control while the United Co-Op cleared the debris from the power lines prior to re-energizing the power lines.

This is absolutely true. House fires move faster, burn hotter and have more poisonous smoke than at anytime in history. It has always been a race against time for firefighters to reach people in a house fire and it is worse than ever now. It underscores just how important it is to have working smoke detectors in your home. Modern smoke detectors are cheap, efficient and many of them have a 10 year battery, after which you tosss them out and get a new one. You don't even have to change the batteries anymore!

Busy day today. We spent a good part of it at the 3-way school for their annual career day, an event that we attend each year. It was fun to talk to the kids about fire safety, the tools on the fire engine and for the older kids, the potential for a career in the fire service.
