New World screwworm (NWS) checkpoints are placed around infested zones to prevent the unauthorized movement of animals infested with NWS.

No animals will be inspected or receive a NWS Treatment/Movement Certificate on site, so stopping at a checkpoint with the correct paperwork will ensure that your stop is quick and easy.

If you don't have a NWS Treatment/Movement Certificate but want to move your animals out of an infested zone, contact the TAHC to schedule your inspection as soon as you know when you'll be moving.

Worried about a quarantine? New World screwworm movement restriction zones work much different than other infectious disease quarantines.

✅Animals can still move! Animals are able to move into and out of the zone as soon as they meet TAHC requirements.

✅Checkpoints are quick and simple! Trailers moving through an infested zone must stop at TAHC checkpoints. If animals are coming from outside of an infested zone and intend to keep moving through the zone to an address outside of the zone, they will receive educational outreach and be allowed to keep moving.

✅TAHC will work with you to avoid interrupting continuity of business! Call the TAHC as soon as you know you want to move animals out of an infested zone. We will schedule an inspection and advise you on how to meet requirements to keep your animals moving safely.

A free New World screwworm inspector training is now available to all Texans through AgriLife Learn.

The course covers New World screwworm biology, inspection protocols, reporting and more, and is open to anyone who wants to better understand how to protect their animals. Those who qualify may apply to become a certified New World screwworm inspector through the Texas Animal Health Commission.

🚨 With the recent detection of New World screwworm in a 3-week-old bovine in Zavala County, TX, USDA urges residents to contact your veterinarian right away if you see any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations in your animals or herd.

If you see signs of maggot infestations in live or very recently dead wild animals, especially in areas near the U.S./Mexico border, please call 866-4USDA-WS (866-487-3297) to report it to your local USDA Wildlife Services office.

With the most recent detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Texas dairy cattle, producers are encouraged to take precautionary steps to prevent exposure to wild birds and their environment. Biosecurity measures should be implemented on all dairies and practiced by all those in contact with birds and dairy cattle.
